Mornings at the Marama Waite family home can be quite hectic most of the time, as the kids need to go to school and the younger ones have to be brought to the daycare center. Everyone was up early and the family left their house at around 7:30 to start their day. When mom Melina was on the way to drop her 9-year-old daughter to school, they were suddenly surprised by a lost yet friendly four-footer.

A random cat had seemingly snuck into the car and then surprised them by popping up in the middle of their drive to school.

“We stopped behind some cars at an intersection then all of a sudden a little cat climbed on the dashboard,” mom Melina said to The Dodo. “It was a complete shock, I didn’t know what to do.”

At first, Melina was a bit in shock and even panicked for a bit! She was confused and had no idea how the cat got there, but she knew that she needed to get the cat off the dashboard so she could focus on the road. It seemed like the kitten was just as confused as she was, this stowaway clearly didn’t think this one through.

Melina and her daughter freaked out when they tried to move the cat somewhere else. The feline four-footer then simply decided to find another spot in the back of the car.

“When the traffic moved I started moving and the cat slipped and panicked and tried to grab the rearview mirror and my daughter freaked out,” she said. “I tried to grab the cat then it fell and ran to the back of the car somewhere.”

Then it struck her: this cat wasn’t really a stranger at all.

Melina had already noticed the cat wandering around the family home, although he never really introduced himself. She figures that he must’ve decided to join everyone else and got into the car in the midst of the chaos.

Mom and daughter decided to make a detour and head back home, just to make sure that this poor and probably scared kitten would be safe and at a familiar place. After a bit of searching, mom and daughter finally found the kitten cleverly hiding underneath a seat. Melina tried to grab him, but the cat got scared and ran away.

With the cat now gone, the day could continue as it normally would. However, it didn’t take long before the feline showed up again.

The very next day, this adorable kitten decided to hang around with the family again – although in a little less shocking and surprising manner this time. He clearly saw this drive as a bonding moment with the family, and they now even give him breakfast every single day.

“He came back for breakfast the next day and every day after that,” Melina said. “He let me get closer [to him] each day.”

Since this kitten was seemingly a stray, Melina decided to borrow a humane trap from a local shelter and take the cat in.

The family named him Dash – probably named after his fast running skills – and he’s been residing safely in the family home ever since. Mom is planning to get him neutered, give him a medical check-up and let the vet scan him for a microchip. If there’s an owner out there looking for him, Dash will finally be able to get back. And in case he’s actually a stray, Dash will have a place to stay at the Waite family.

Either way, Dash’s future is looking bright – and it all started by sneaking into a car.
