We’ve always believed that dogs are man’s best friend.

However, we think we haven’t fully understood the extent of their unwavering dedication and loyalty. And while we have seen stories of dogs being there for their humans through thick and thin, stories showing their commitment can still surprise us.

A dog in Ecuador melted hearts when he showed the amount of love he has for his late owner — that even when one of them had to go, the dog knew that he had to stay.

In a post by a local funeral parlor, an old lady passed away after a life well-lived.

Maria Isabel Benites Chamba was 95 when she was laid to rest. As with her age, friends, and family from different generations paid their respects and celebrated her life.

However, one attendee caught everyone’s attention. One member of Chamba’s family stood a vigilant guard by her casket.

Chamba’s beloved dog Bumer never left her side.

During the wake, the dog can be seen sitting down under her casket. He stayed there as emotions from people came and went.

Then, when it was time to take Chamba to her final resting place, Bumer still refused to leave her side. In a video taken by the funeral service provider, Bumer climbed to the back of the hearse and sat beside Chamba.

The dog’s unwavering faithfulness moved people.

“You could see the loyalty and affection that existed between her and her dog. He was always there with his owner.” a spokesperson for the funeral home told The Dodo.

The spokesperson also shared that after placing the casket into the hearse, little Bumer circled around the vehicle before hopping in. They said it was a “tremendous example of loyalty.”

They also said that humans can learn a thing or two from Bumer’s exemplar display. And while he grieved his loss, people celebrated that love he was capable of giving.

People expressed their sadness and admiration for Bumer.

In a translated comment, one said that dogs aren’t the only ones who go through this kind of pain and show of loyalty. Cats also stay with their owners.

Some comments also lamented how humans treat animals. Some are hurt, abandoned, and starved when these animals only want love and affection. And that despite hese deplorable acts, some animals remain loyal.

Cases like these aren’t strange either.

Around the globe, there are moments when beloved pets refuse to leave their owner’s graves. A dog from Chile stayed on the roadside with his owner after he was hit by a vehicle.

Another dog lay over his owner’s grave the moment it was finally covered in dirt. This just goes to show how much our dogs, and other pets, love us. And the least we could do is show them the same faithfulness and loyalty.

Bumer, according to the funeral home, was last seen with Chamba’s family. And through this time of great loss, may they find comfort in each other’s love.
