Meet Luhu, the saddest looking cat in the world

While the late Grumpy Cat always turned our frown upside down with her deceptively cranky face, there’s a new viral cat on the block with a facial expression that doesn’t match its personality.

Meet Luhu, the perfectly happy but very sad-looking cat:

Luhu and his mom Maggie Liu have managed to accumulate 162K followers and counting on Instagram thanks to his adorable little face.

The celebrity cat even has a brother named Bardie who doesn’t look too thrilled about life either.

It’s almost heartbreaking to look at the sweet cat’s photos without wanting to go all the way to his home in Beijing, China for a snuggle. But we have to remember that Luhu’s perfectly pleased with life – he’s not sad, that’s just his permanent expression.

He just always looks like someone gave him some very bad news.

“He’s quite outgoing. He is not shy at all [and] loves to take photos,” his mom told PEOPLE in 2018 when the photos started going viral.

Liu has had Luhu since he was just weeks old after she adopted him from a friend. The cat’s face has a permanent droop due to a developmental abnormality and there were some health problems that went along with it, making him a very sick kitten.

“When he was two weeks he went to [the] hospital because his eyes, respiratory system and reproductive system [were] born with developmental defects. My friend didn’t have much time to take care of him, so I have [had] him since 3 weeks [after] the hospital,” she told PEOPLE.

Luhu’s facial droop was present at birth, but his sad eyes are actually the result of an operation he underwent early on after an infection got out of control.

Despite looking pretty vulnerable, Luhu can actually be a bit of a bully. But because of his disability, other cats are very nice to him – even if his brother is constantly looking angry.

What a pair these two make!

While Liu doesn’t mind having a celebrity cat in the house, she also doesn’t seem to have plans for a merchandise empire or world tours like Grumpy Cat undertook.

Instead, she just wants to share her adorable cats with the world online and ensure they have the best life possible.

“I did not have any plans [for] my cats so far,” she told ABC News. “I wish my cats keep healthy and live with me until they are gone.”

Luhu was born in 2012, so there are now thousands of posts on Liu’s Instagram page where you can follow his development from kittenhood.

That is, if your heart can take it.
