Mama cat hailed as hero after rushing into burning building to save her babies

Heroes most definitely aren’t only limited to us humans. Animals can be just as brave and heroic as any of us. We often see headlines of moms and dads running into their burning home to save their children, but this story is a little bit different.

A motherly cat from Brooklyn risked her own life and was engulfed in flames to save her five kittens that were still inside.

The firefighters didn’t know what they were seeing.

The mama cat, Scarlett, simply ran into the home and carried each of her kittens to safety, one by one.

The garage was in flames and every time Scarlett went inside, she became more and more injured.

After a couple of trips, you could tell that she had already lost most of her fur and suffered from severe burn wounds. By the time she rescued the final kitten, firefighters witnessed her fainting, completely exhausted.

Scarlett and her litter were also strays, so there was no human owner out there who could care for them.

Firefighters put out the flames in the Brooklyn home and immediately made sure that Scarlett and her litter received medical attention afterward.

After she finally got to safety and got every kitten out, the vets could see just how extensive the damage was. She had wounds all over her paws as well as her ears, and the poor cat’s eyes were practically sealed shut. The flames were extinguished, but the danger was definitely still there for this brave feline.

Firefighter David Gianelli immediately brought all of them to the nearest veterinary clinic to make sure that they’d have every chance possible to recover. Sadly, one of the kittens lost her life as the damage caused by the fire was just too grave.

However, mom’s heroic actions have saved the lives of her four other kittens, who were soon thriving in their respective adoptive homes.

The news about Scarlett, her actions, and her litter, quickly made the news, even internationally. They also received fan mail from all over the world, and people were simply lining up to adopt these adorable furry friends. The clinic didn’t want to split them up entirely, so they decided to let people adopt them in pairs, two by two.

Scarlett herself has also found a new, loving forever home, and she has found a perfect match in Karen Wellen.

Karen definitely knows what it’s like to go through something tragic, as she went through a car injury and wanted to adopt a cat who was damaged or hurt.

Tragically, Scarlett is now no longer with us, but her heroic story will never be forgotten. She was posthumously given a certificate of bravery by the British Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The clinic where they were all treated, the North Shore Animal League, even named an award after her: the Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism.

The amazing story was also told in two children’s books named “Scarlett Saves Her Family” and “The Bravest Cat!”

It’s clear that the actions of this brave feline will never be forgotten. A true hero in every sense of the word!
