Mama dog melts hearts comforting anxious “son” after being taken to crowded shelter

There’s nothing safer for a child than a parent’s love.

When we were younger, whenever we saw something scary or we felt the need to be protected, we instinctively cower behind or close to our parents.

Then, just like that, all the scary things seem to go away. But in this story, that kind of parental devotion is not only present in human beings.

This is true with dogs, too.

Sookie and Dino are stray dogs.

“People had seen the dogs running around,” Edi Kelley, director of Paws Crossed Dog Rescue, told The Dodo. “They were starving to death, and some people said they were afraid of them, which makes no sense to me at all, so animal control came in and took them to the shelter.”

They were rescued in the Monroeville area in Alabama. Unfortunately, the dog shelter they got into was already crowded and full of other rescued dogs.

The sight would’ve been overwhelming.

When one mentions that a shelter is busy, you can already imagine what can be found inside.

Dogs of different sizes where those with ill temperaments bark at anyone and anything.

Dogs are also found in different conditions. Some are weak, sick, and old. Others are irritated or in pain.

It’s just so much chaos.

It was then that the staff noticed the dynamics of the duo.

Dino was obviously terrified by the sight, smell, and sounds in the shelter.

And to seek comfort, Dino nuzzles into Sookie’s neck or under her jaw.

They noticed that this behavior helped him calm down.

At that point, given how seemingly close they were, the shelter staff assumed they were a mother and son duo.

More than friends, they were family.

Kelley also shared that Dino was definitely much younger and doesn’t “act like a dog who’s a mate.”

Dino would nuzzle into Sookie or tuck his head against hers.

He follows her around and always wants to be closer to her. He also becomes very stressed when he’s not touching her in any way.

But there was more to Sookie than met the eye.

They found out Sookie was pregnant.

This means that from time to time, they had to separate Dino from his mother for safety reasons. Dino would always be upset whenever this happened.

Staff members said that he would just howl and cry nonstop. Then, he’d calm down whenever he was reunited with Sookie.

The staff knew they had to help Dino if they want them to be adopted together.

In contrast to Dino, Sookie, meanwhile, is very social and actually enjoys attention.

While Dino recoils against touch, Sookie embraces them with much delight.

They had high hopes for Dino.

The staff planned to keep Sookie’s family until her puppies grew to about 4 weeks old. They would then be decked to be rehomed.

They wished, however, that Sookie and Dino would be adopted together.

Until then, Dino would be socializing.

To start with this initiative, Sookie and Dino were transferred to foster care so that Dino can have more experience being around humans and other animals.

They hope that when he becomes amiable, the chances of being adopted will increase.

“They’ll really work with him, and help bring out his personality, and show him that people aren’t harmful,” Kelley told The Dodo.

Well, it worked.

The rescue posted a wonderful update.

Sookie and Dino were finally adopted together!

Their story just goes to prove that every life is worth saving, and we’re grateful to everyone that works to save them.
