Mama dog didn’t think she’d ever see her puppies again – then a worker pulls them out
Mama dog sat scared in the corner of a room at the dog shelter. Her name is Cora and her heart was broken.
She recently gave birth to a litter of four puppies and was so proud to be a mom. But out of nowhere, her former owner grabbed her and another dog, only to drop them off at the Marin Humane Society in Novato, California. Tearing a dog family apart by keeping the four pups.
You can see the sadness and confusion in Cora’s eyes. The shelter workers went to work trying to locate the person who dumped the dogs and separated Cora from her litter.
Those dogs needed to be with their mother and their mother needed them.
Mother dogs have an instant connection with their pups. Soon after birth, the maternal instinct kicks in and the desire to stay near the puppies and to nurse becomes a priority. It’s essential to the health of the puppies to nurse from the mother’s milk for at least the first 4 weeks.
Those pups werenât safe and shouldnât have removed from Cora so soon.
It is also a health risk for the mother if she doesn’t nurse. If they don’t, moms can develop mastitis and other complications from not naturally nursing their babies long enough.
Cora had spent her time in the corner behind her kennel since arriving at the shelter. Then her ears perked up…
The shelter worker had brought another kennel into the room and Cora could her the little whimpers from within. One puppy was brought out and Cora locked eye on it. She peeked around her kennel as the second puppy was revealed.
It’s then clear Cora knows that these puppies are hers.
Tail-wagging Cora leaves the corner and picks up the scent of the dogs. She is so happy!
The pups are scampering all over the place, jumping over their mother. Cora gets eager and goes into the pups’ kennel to retrieve the others. All four of her littles are back with her. The joy begins and no one can contain themselves.
âSheâs beautiful. She looks like a totally different girl with her babies back.â – says the woman behind the camera
After Cora has checked the kennel several times to see if she missed a puppy, she then moves on to say thank you to the woman who brought the babies back into her life. Cora climbs halfway up her lap, extends her neck up and looks into her eyes. The people in the room say “she’s thanking you, she’s thanking you.”
All the puppies have missed their mom so much, that all they want to do is nurse. At first, it seems a bit overwhelming for Cora as they all stumble over each other. But soon enough, Cora lays against the shelter worker, settles to her side and allows the pups the nourishment they need.
They all happily stayed together for the coming weeks. Lots of feeding and lots of naps happened until the pups would be strong enough to find their forever homes. In the meantime all the puppies got names based on Downtown Abbey characters; Carson, Moseley, Branson, and Edith.
