When Jody Thompson went inside the home, he had no idea that his life was about to change dramatically.
Thompson was shocked at what he saw. The house he’d been called to was squalid. Then he saw John, a young boy, among all the filth.
“When I seen him in the house, I knew.” – Jody Thompson.
The boy looked up at Thompson, scared.
Little did the boy realize that Thompson was going to rescue him from this awful existence.
Thompson could see that John had not eaten in a long time. He also had signs of being beaten.
So Thompson took the boy to the ICU. In the hospital, Thompson stayed by the boy’s side. John was terrified. But with Thompson around, he realized that he was going to be ok.
At that point, Thompson had already contacted his wife. He wanted to adopt John and nothing could stop him.
He knew that the boy needed a home. Both of his parents were going to jail. And Thompson worried about what might happen to John in the foster system.
Soon, Thompson and his wife began the process of adopting John.
Naturally, this process was slow. But as the days went by, the adoption progressed. And one year later, John was officially Thompson’s son.
After John came into the Thompsons’ home, he thrived.
In no time, he became a confident young man. And at school, he ended up getting straight A’s, ending up in the gifted and talented program.
And while the adoption was being processed, the Thompsons learned something that would change their lives even more.
John’s biological mother had been pregnant when she went to prison. She then gave birth to a baby girl. As soon as they could, the Thompsons adopted the girl, ensuring that she would have a safe home and a loving family.
“We picked her up at the hospital. She was barely 24 hours old and brought her home.” – Jody Thompson.
A report of this story then appeared on YouTube. It made a big impact on the site.
To date, it has gained over 124,000 views. It also has more than 200 likes and dozens of comments. People have been saying things like this:
Jody Thompson has made a huge difference. Thanks to him and his family, two children are able to live the lives they deserve.
Sadly, there are so many others that are not so lucky. In 2019, more than 672,000 children had to spend time in foster care in America. And the US foster system is completely dysfunctional.
The kids who enter the foster system are often separated from their siblings, have little stability, and suffer further abuse.
Yes, it is important to celebrate what Jody Thompson did. But it’s also important to remember that in the USA, in every single state, children are suffering due to the foster system.
And of course, every year, people age out of the foster system.
These young adults are often subject to homelessness, unemployment and incarceration. Hopefully, in the future, the government will make efforts to improve the foster system and ensure that people who age out of the foster system are given the support they need to live successful, happy lives.
