Singer sings ‘Lean On Me’ to cheer people up, not knowing his dog would join in
Dogs communicate via their howls and barking. In addition to communicating with other dogs and humans, sometimes a dog will use their vocalization to sing along to a favorite song.
Some studies even suggest that dogs have a sense of pitch. One husky, named Kovu, has shown his singing chops in a video online.
Kovu has no problem when speaking his mind
With his family since he was a puppy, Kovu doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind or letting his opinion be known. Like many huskies, he is perfectly fine speaking out, usually in the form of a low growl or howl.
“Kovu certainly has a personality — he is sassy, loving, caring, and definitely vocal,” Tate Hegstrom, Kovu’s owner, told The Dodo. “His voice allows him to show so many different emotions depending on his mood.”
Kovu likes to sing
A worker in the healthcare field, Hegstrom works as an administrative resident at a healthcare facility in Denver, Colorado. He also has a passion for music, a passion that Kovu seems to share with him. The dog loves to sing along with his dad whenever he starts playing the guitar.
“Kovu started singing as soon as he could howl — since he was a puppy,” Hegstrom said. “Any time I play the guitar and sing, he jumps right in with some harmony!”
Hegstrom dedicates a song to his fellow healthcare workers
As a musician, Hegstrom also knows how effective music can be as a stress reliever, especially in times of crisis, like the current COVID-19 pandemic.
As a way to help his fellow healthcare workers fight the stresses of their job, Hegstrom decided to dedicate a song to all of the healthcare workers around the world.
Kovu wanted to be a part of Hegstrom’s tribute
It seemed Kovu also wanted to participate, and as soon as Hegstrom started to sing his rendition of the song “Lean On Me,” Kovu joined in. Howling along, Kovu was the perfect accompaniment to Hegstrom’s playing and voice.
At the end of the video, the talented dog leaned into his dad as a reminder that we all need a little love and support at this moment in time.
The video becomes popular on Instagram
After posting the video on his Instagram account, Hegstrom and Kovu’s duet garnered over 26,000 views. The video’s popularity just proves the point that many people recognize a heartfelt performance when they see it.

“During a time when being physically together as a community is difficult, people resort to finding community online,” Hegstrom said. “I think during this time, a video with a cute puppy who can sing a song with an uplifting message is something people needed, and it’s given people a smile.”
