How do we really know if we are seeing true love? Is it when couples are not shy about showing affection for each other? Or is it when they are together for so long?

We may never truly identify when it is true love that we are experiencing, but one thing is for sure: it is rare.

So, when people find that kind of love, everything should be done to keep it. Sure, there can be challenges and obstacles as they go along life, but when the love is true, there will always be a way for it to stay.

The lovely couple

We may hear a lot of people say that the phrase “love is forever” is so cliché, but there can be real couples who know this statement as a true story that they get to live in. One of these lucky couples is Bill and Glad Forward, husband and wife for more than 50 years.

Throughout the years, this couple has remained strong despite the tough challenges they have faced together. They are never giving up on each other, and no difficulty will ever stop them from living a life of love and loyalty, not even the dreaded Alzheimer’s disease.

The toughest battle ever

Just like other couples, Bill and Glad have vowed to be together in sickness and in health. And in 2004, this vow was taken to the test when Glad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, a disease that slowly robs a person of their memories and thinking skills. The illness is the most common cause of dementia and eventually leads people into losing interest in eating and being unable to look after themselves.

The couple got heartbroken after hearing the unfortunate news. But they had no other option but to face the challenge head-on and be stronger than ever.

What made this news even harder to accept was the fact that the couple loves the outdoors and usually spend their bonding moments while biking with their kids. Glad’s diagnosis will surely deter the family from doing their regular biking activities.

Bill knew he had to do something.

He was about to lose his biking buddy and he would never let that happen. And so, he decided to think of a way to bring Glad back on the road, despite her condition. Besides, going outside and enjoying the beauty of nature will do a lot of good for his wife.

Bill did some conceptualization and finally came up with a design for a unique bike for his beloved Glad. He did not waste any time at all. He built the special bike and soon enough, the couple was back to biking again.

A bike made out of love

Of course, Glad would not be able to ride a bike on her own anymore so Bill thought of bringing her instead. He made a customized seat in front of his bike where his wife can comfortably perch while Bill pedaled from behind her.

Bill called it “The Bike Chair” and the unique build of the couple’s bicycle is just perfect.

Just when people thought that Glad’s sickness will hinder the couple’s outdoor activities, Bill made it a point that they are always spending time outside, biking to their favorite places such as the beach and the park.

Biking is such an important thing for the couple and Bill explained why:

“I used to ride everywhere on my bike and Glad had her bike as well, and we’d put a bay chair on the front of her bike, so we carried our babies around on the bikes. Bikes have been part of our lives, and I guess that has something to do with this now.”

He loves his wife very much and will never consider her as a burden, now that she is fully relying on him.

“I don’t count it a burden whatsoever, I count it a great privilege to care for this one I have loved all these years. She’s my princess and I’m her William and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Sharing the remarkable idea

After the amazing impact that the special bike has made to Bill and Glad’s life, the man now wants to make the product available to other people. They started “The Bike Chair Team” and with their product, the team hopes to give a chance to others with mobility issues to still experience the beauty of life and enjoying the beautiful world outside.

We surely hope that this lovely couple spends more biking moments together. They truly deserve to be happy and their love story is one that will always inspire people who have come across their paths.
