Man spends 8 years building a 5,700-square-foot home inside a desert cave

No one wants to spend their life living inside a cave – except maybe this one!

We humans started our lives living in caves, hunting animals, and planting our own farms. Over many millennia, we have evolved and now most of us have our own modern home with access to technology.

But for some, the concept of the modern home doesn’t appeal to them anymore. They prefer an old-school style with a little modern touch.

A man went completely insane and built a house out of a cave!

A long time ago, in a faraway desert, a man built a cave that is now everyone’s dream destination. We know this sounds pretty wild, but it is true.

Everything about this house is no short of a paradise.

In the desert, there is a paradise where there is every facility. You plant your vegetables, the sun shines bright through the window, a beautiful backdrop, you can jam on any music you want, and the best part—it is free from the urban noise most people despise.

The story about the man who built it and how he did it is even more fascinating.

The man behind this magnificent wasteland paradise is Grant Johnson. He started his project in the early 1980s—when he saved enough to purchase underdeveloped land in Boulder, Utah. He had just enough to buy 40 acres of undeveloped land.

All he had was a few acres of deserted and undeveloped land.

Johnson decided to move to Moab, Utah in search of a place to settle. He was a miner and everything he had at the start of his journey was undeveloped land in the middle of a desert.

“When I was 17, I got kicked out of the high school and moved to Moab. I work my way through college, seven different mines.” Grant Johnson.

During his initial days, he used the land he brought as a spot for horse riding. But horseback riding expeditions were not on his agenda. It was time for some smoke.

Grant Johnson wanted to build a cave house, so he blew up the mountain!

Everything started with a boom and so did this paradise. Johnson blasted into the large bedrock for eight years in a row to make room for this ambitious house. But that wasn’t what Johnson had in mind at the outset.

“My original plan was to find a place in the wilderness in the crayons and irrigate, you know, and grow my food in the wilderness” Grant Johnson

Johnson didn’t foresee himself building this huge rock house. It was something implausible for him during the early days.

Before this paradise, Johnson had a very rough lifestyle.

The project was ambitious and it took several decades before it was fully completed. Johnson didn’t have any place to stay during those times and so he had to spend 25 years of his life in a trailer. He lived without any electricity or water.

Johnson later found a way to pump electricity and started his homestead.

Johnson was able to bring in electricity and gain access to the satellite internet after several years of development. He then raised dairy cows, pigs, and horses. He started his homestead and it was smooth flowing.

It is after that Johnson started his real journey and finally built a house under a cave.

The house is 5,700 square feet and has every modern luxury. The 5,700 square feet land paradise was too big for just one person, so Johnson decided to rent out some of it and share the experience.

Johnson rented a two-bedroom and a bathroom apartment for any visitors on Airbnb. If you want to experience this paradise, you can book a stay at Airbnb.

After years of hard work and struggle, Johnson enjoys living in his new home. Why wouldn’t he?

The house has everything and is self-sustainable. Johnson doesn’t have to rely on anybody, he has his own agriculture and his own farm. He will never run out of resources. Renting some part of his paradise gives him some extra income too.

“People get inspired by it. I didn’t expect that so much. And it really is the case. Positive living in a negative space.” Grant Johnson.

We are definitely impressed by Johnson’s desert paradise and we are sure you’re too.
