Melissa Meiners has two big loves in her life: her affectionate boyfriend James Killen, but he has to share Melissa’s attention with her adorable pooch who listens to name Sammy. Ever since they started dating, Melissa made it very clear that he had to get along with Sammy or things probably wouldn’t work out.

Of course, she (kind of) meant it as a joke, but it’s clear that nothing will come between Melissa and this absolutely adorable furball.

Sammy loves hanging around everyone, but it can take him a little bit before he really warms up to people. Luckily, Sammy and James became best buds right from the get-go.

“I told him that if Sammy didn’t like him, we wouldn’t be continuing to see each other. I was half kidding — that would definitely be a red flag because Sammy loves everyone, but sometimes it takes a time or two meeting someone for him to warm up to them. Turns out I had nothing to worry about, it was instant love between the two of them. Sammy has claimed James as his other person, and their relationship is the sweetest thing in the world to me,” Melissa said to The Dodo.

In fact, James loves Sammy just as much as Melissa does! When these two are together, they’re practically inseparable. The smile on their faces really says more than a thousand words.

The two buddies go on all sorts of adventures together and love spending time with each other.

For example, the couple regularly meets at James’ house, and Sammy loves to join them and James’ teenage daughters during movie night. Sometimes, Sammy likes to hang in the master bedroom, but the two lovebirds quickly noticed that the bed was a little bit too tall for Sammy to get on and off. Every single time, Melissa had to bring special doggy stairs so that the pooch wouldn’t have difficulties resting in bed.

However, James felt bad Sammy couldn’t do it on his own and that mommy always has to bring special equipment, so he decided to do something about it.

At first, he had the idea to build some stairs for the adorable little pooch, but then he figured a ramp would be a better idea.

“It wouldn’t be possible for Sammy to get up to the bed, unless he became ‘Air Bud,’” James mentioned. “So in order to keep Melissa from having to drag the stairs over for movie nights, I wanted to make some stairs for my buddy. I decided on a ramp instead, because I thought it would be easier on his hips and back.”

As soon as the idea popped up in his head, James immediately got to work. He was going for a foldable design at first, so the ramp could be neatly put it away when Sammy wasn’t there. However, he felt that the design wasn’t rigid enough and wanted to play it safe so the dog wouldn’t hurt himself.

He built a DIY ramp and attached it directly to his bed frame instead.

“I can’t imagine Melissa and Sammy not being part of our lives, so there was no thought to it other than his safety.”

When Melissa came over to his place as soon as the ramp was finished, she broke out in tears.

Seeing how much James cared about Sammy made her heart melt!

“James built the ramp at the end of May, a few days shy of us dating for four months,” Meiners said. “We have always kind of known that this is it for us, but this just solidified it even more for me, especially when I found out that it was now a permanent fixture. When I saw the ramp, I instantly teared up at the thoughtful gesture he had made. With me, it’s all about the little things, and he shows me that he loves me with sweet gestures like this all the time. He is so good to me, and so good to Sammy as well.”

As for the cute little furball, he loves his new ramp! Now he can jump on the bed whenever he wants, and snuggle with his two human parents. What more could you possibly ask for?

One thing is clear: these three are definitely made for each other!
