After not being able to find a stick at the park, man makes “stick library” for the local dogs
Andrew Taylor of Kaiapoi, New Zealand is a dog lover. He loves to watch his daughter’s dog, Bella, run and play in the park. So, when he realized that there were no sticks for the dogs to play with, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Using his knowledge of woodworking, Taylor built a stick library for the dogs in the park and filled it with sticks for them to play with.
Andrew Taylor came up with the perfect idea
“Our dog Bella loves a good stick, but there were no good sticks at our new dog park in Kaiapoi,” Taylor’s daughter Tayla told LADBible. “So, my wholesome dad made a stick library so all the doggos can enjoy a good stick.”
Taylor came up with the idea while he was trimming the trees in his yard. He had all of these branches left over and he had the perfect use for them. Thinking of Bella and the other dogs in the park, he set to work in his woodshop to make a box to hold all of them.
Luckily, Taylor had woodworking experience
First, he found an old crate to act as the box to hold the sticks for the library. Next, he cut words into a sign he attached to the top of the box saying “Stick Library.” He also added the words “Please Return.” This was so the dogs would know to return the sticks for others to use once they were finished with them.
He made sure to make the sticks safe for the dogs to use
Next, he sanded the branches from his yard so that there were no pointy edges to make them safer for the dogs to use. He then placed the sticks in the box before taking it to the park. The Stick Library was extremely popular with dogs and owners at the park, according to Tayla.
A celebration is planned
Tayla decided to have a celebration commemorating the Stick Library. She took to social media where she posted about the upcoming celebration to the Kaiapoi Residents Noticeboard on social media. She wanted everyone to come out and share pictures of their dogs using the Stick Library as a thank you for her father.
The Stick Library is a success
“Approximately 50 people turned up with their dogs and one guy even brought his cat,” Tayla said. “As people started to arrive there was a disbelief of how simple the idea was, but it’s one of those ideas no one had thought of. All the dog owners appreciate it as they all have experienced the ‘good stick search’ which isn’t always fruitful, it’s an idea that just makes sense to them.”
And while local dog owners in the neighborhood loved the idea, their dogs probably liked the Stick Library even more. Now, they could play with the sticks to their heart’s content without having to go through the trouble of finding a stick to play with. Here is the video of the ingenious project being made.
