Retired man builds doggie train — takes his foster dogs on adventures around town
When people abandon their dogs, they tend to take to them to a remote location and leave them there. In Fort Worth, Texas, that location was oftentimes Eugene Bostick’s farm. Living on a dead-end street, Bostick has taken on several strays left on his property over the years since his retirement.
Now, he has a different job. He acts as a train conductor for the doggie train he made to carry his foster dogs around town.
Bostick takes care of the dogs abandoned on his farm
“People sometimes come by and dump dogs out here, leaving them to starve,” Bostick told The Dodo. “So, we started feeding them, letting them in, taking them to the vet to get them spayed and neutered. We made a place for them to live.”
He came up with the idea of a train as a way to keep the dogs entertained. He wanted the dogs he was taking care of to do more than just sit around his farm all day. He felt like they needed to get out and see other places in Fort Worth. He was inspired by something he saw while out one day.
Inspiration struck
“One day I was out, and I see this guy with a tractor who attached these carts to pull rocks. I thought, ‘Dang, that would do for a dog train,'” said Bostick. “I’m a pretty good welder, so I took these plastic barrels with holes cut in them and put wheels under them and tied them together.”
And thus, the dog train was born.
Building the dog train
A skilled welder, Bostick was able to come up with the idea for his train. Taking the plastic barrels, Bostick made holes in them large enough for the dogs to sit comfortably in. He then attached the wheels to each car before attaching the whole setup to his tractor.
“Whenever they hear me hooking the tractor up to it, man, they get so excited,” said Bostick. “They all come running and jump in on their own. They’re ready to go.”
The dogs are happy to take a ride
Then it is simply a matter of taking the dogs to whatever destination he has planned for them for the day. Once or twice a week, he’ll load up all of the dogs and take them for a ride on the train, mainly to quieter parts of town.
As for the dogs, they seem happy enough, barking as they make their way to their destination, as shown in a YouTube video posted about the story.
The dog train becomes popular online
Bostick, his dogs, and the dog train have become an Internet sensation, garnering over 280,000 views on the YouTube video. Bostick takes pride in keeping the train running. His goal is to make the dogs as happy as he can.
Although all of Bostick’s dogs were abandoned, he still loves them enough to provide what he can for them. If only more people cared about their dogs as much.
