Joe Ballew hated the idea of keeping his dog, Stella, tied to a leash in the yard. So he thought he’d build a large fence so the dog could roam without escaping.
There’s nothing like having a nice yard for your dog to roam around in. Most dogs love having an outdoor area. And most owners love letting their dogs in the yard, as it means they need less walking.
Joe Ballew knew that his yard would be perfect for his dog, Stella, to have to herself, if it weren’t for the fact that she was such an escape artist.
But Ballew has always been a handy person. So he decided to install a fence around the yard that promised to be canine proof.
For an entire day, Ballew toiled in the yard, putting the fence together.
When he was done, he was so proud, he thought he’d make a video and show his dog.
So he hit record and let the dog into the yard.
He started showing the fence off on the camera and said “Yep, just completed fixing this fence. Pretty proud of it I’d have to say. Try to keep Stella in the yard.”
Just then, Stella ran along the edge of the fence. When she got to one end, she stopped briefly and leaped.
In a flash, the dog had disappeared over into the street. The fence had posed no problem for the adventurous animal.
Ballew couldn’t quite believe what he had seen. Suddenly, he realized that his hard work was all for nothing. Clearly, he would have to start all over again and build the fence bigger that time around.
Eventually, Ballew realized the humor of his footage and uploaded it to YouTube.
He was amazed when it went viral. To date, the video has gained over 4.3 million views. It also has more than 12,000 likes and 500 comments. People have been saying things like this:
Of course, there are a number of ways to keep a dog in the yard.
If you already have a fence that is ineffective, like Ballew, then it’s possible to create a lean in/awning with chicken wire. This can be a pretty easy way to stop jumpers like Stella. You can also attach something called a coyote roller to the top of the fence, which stops dogs from being able to gain a firm footing on the top of the fence.
It’s also important to remember that some dogs are less inclined to want to escape than others.
If you want to get a dog, then it can be a great reassurance to know that they aren’t escape-artists. In fact, Bark Post states that Labrador Retrievers, Chihuahuas, Huskies, Boxers, Jack Russell Terriers, Beagles, German Shepherds, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Poodles and Dachshunds are the most likely dogs to mount an escape attempt.
So don’t make the same mistake that Ballew and so many other dog owners have made. If you want to keep your dog fenced in, build those fences high and install extra security measures!
