Man bravely dives 25 feet off a bridge to rescue toddler after car crash
Witnessing a road accident is frightening. Being involved in one is a totally different story. It’s like a nightmare come to life.
Jonathan Bauer was one of the people involved in an accident in Ocean City’s Route 90 Bridge in Maryland.
He was with his 13-year-old daughter at that time. As he recalled the incident, the first thing he heard was the sound of screeching tires. And soon after that, he witnessed a truck turn over right on the railing of the bridge.
His first instinct was to check his daughter.
The accident involved five vehicles. It was so bad that he had to make sure his daughter was fine before assessing the situation outside.
In an interview with WJLA, he shared:
“There was glass everywhere, all through [Ava’s] hair, all over the car and the dashboard, so I immediately stopped to check [Ava] was OK.”
Then, he went out of the car.
Outside, he was able to help a passenger get out of a truck. After that, people started pointing towards the water.
Jonathan recalled:
“He just pointed down at the water and when I looked over I saw the car seat and then about six feet away from the car seat was a little girl. She was on her back, completely floating, head completely out of the water, arms moving, legs kicking, and a little pink dress.”
The minute he saw the little girl, he knew he had to act fast.
He jumped into the water, not thinking about the height or the temperature of the water. He just had to rescue that poor baby.
After reaching the girl, he got her out of the water.
He remembered immediately patting her on the back. Soon after, she began to spit a lot of water and started coughing.
Help finally arrived.
A couple was boating on that very day. They saw Jonathan in the water, frantically waving his arms around. After seeing his condition, they quickly went to his location.
They can clearly recall Jonathan’s reaction that day. They shared:
“He didn’t say anything. He was just so shocked of what happened.”
The young girl was eventually taken to John Hopkins Children’s Center.
There, she was assessed, treated, and released after a 10-day stay. The other victims were taken to other hospitals and were released after getting the all-clear.
At first, Jonathan didn’t want the public to know his identity.
He wanted to make sure that the little girl was safe and stable first before he opened up about what happened. This just proves that he doesn’t really consider himself a hero. He didn’t even want the spotlight on him after what he did.
In an interview with the Eagle Valley News, the chief of the Ocean City Fire Department, Richard Bowers, shared:
“What he did was without question a heroic thing, and very courageous thing to jump into over the railing, down 25 to 30 feet into open water.”
