Man abandons dog at shelter for being ‘too affectionate’
Every now and again, there comes a tragic time in a dog owner’s life where they have to give them up. Whether it’s due to a sudden move that doesn’t allow for your furry friend to follow, a financial loss, or a new disability, the reason is awful but understandable.
Unfortunately, there are other instances where dogs are abandoned with no real explanation at all. Pets are just dropped and abandoned to animal shelters, random neighborhood homes, or worse… on the side of a street somewhere. On the other hand, sometimes dogs are dropped off or abandoned because destiny has something else in store for them.
In 2015, a man in Texas brought his dog, Jubilee, to the shelter to leave her there. His reason? She was “too affectionate”.
Or, at least that’s how it was portrayed in the media.
In actuality, it turned out that the one-year-old Blue Heeler/Irish Setter mixed pup had a little more background than what was first given. For beginners, her owner had adopted her as a rescue from the shelter.
Jubilee’s first owner had every intention of keeping her when he took her home.
As many would-be rescuers do, though, he soon found out that sometimes a rescue requires a lot more attention than some others. The dog, unfortunately, was more than he could handle. Not only was Jubilee particularly clingy to him, but she also had severe anxiety issues that he just wasn’t trained or equipped to handle.
Before long, Jubilee’s owner found himself back at the Texas-based Montgomery County Animal Shelter requesting them to take her in. The loving dog sitting quietly near his side as he signed her away.
A woman waiting in the shelter overheard Jubilee’s owner saying “she always wants to be by my side” when giving an explanation for giving her up. Understandably, she was baffled that an overabundance of love and affection could cause anyone to turn such a sweet dog away. So, she snapped a photo and shared her thoughts in a post to social media.
What she didn’t mention in her post is what the shelter’s rescue coordinator, Minda Emas Harris, made clear to HuffPost later on; there were other reason’s Jubilee’s owner felt like he wasn’t the right human to take care of her.
“He had a whole list of other reasons for turning her in: ate his sofa, chewed a baseboard, a cushion, etc. He brought her to a shelter, hoping we would do what we are supposed to do — find her a home.”
As you can guess, the post quickly went viral, reaching over 35,000 people in less than the space of a single day.
It took less than 24 hours for Jubilee’s photo to circulate the internet. The story of her being rejected for being overly affectionate was just too much for people to handle, and thousands were clamoring to bring her home.
Ultimately, Samantha Fewox would be the lucky human to take the lover-dog home with her. The match was perfect, as Fewox already has a sweet puppy named Abby. Abby was able to keep Jubilee at ease while her new human was away. Now Jubilee could play and cuddle with her sibling instead of acting out from anxiety. Plus, Fewox hired an experienced trainer to help Jubilee learn how to deal with her doggy-emotions.
“It touched me. She loved so much. I knew I was supposed to have her,” Fewox said.
Jubilee didn’t just get a new mom and fur-sister when she was adopted by Fewox. She also gained the best big brother that anyone could ever ask for. The four are one heck of a tight-knit group, and the best part? Jubilee now gets all the love and affection that she deserves, and no one in her life has a single complaint about it.
There is another upside to Jubilee’s story, too. Since her picture went viral and she was adopted so fast, other dogs from the shelter ended up going to their forever homes, too. As for Fewox, she couldn’t be any happier that fate, and Jubilee’s former owner, brought her and her dog together.
“I am so thankful he made the decision to do that or we would not have this sweet little dog in our life,” she said.

While a person should never adopt a dog unless they know what that dog will need from them, it has happened. We are just glad that Jubilee’s former owner had the humility to admit he bit off more than he could chew. If he hadn’t returned her to the shelter, she never would have met her true forever family, and nobody ever wins when a thing like that happens.
