The man knew that the dog was sweltering. But if he got into legal trouble, that could be with him for the rest of his life.
Mark Lewis was attending a festival, when he noticed something horrifying.
Someone had left their dog inside their car.
It was 90 degrees outside. How hot must it have been inside the car?
So Lewis walked up to the car to see how the dog was doing.
The poor animal was panting badly.
He was sitting on the black leather chairs, which must have been scorching hot.
“It was a recipe for disaster.” – Mark Lewis talking to Inside Edition.
At first, Lewis told the organizers of the festival.
They made an announcement asking the owners to come to the car to let their dog out.
But the minutes passed, and no one came.
Lewis stood by the car, looking at the poor dog behind the glass.
50 minutes passed. If someone didn’t act soon, the animal would die.
But smashing the window? He was worried that this would land him in trouble. Lewis had always been a law-abiding person.
Would he end up getting arrested if he tried to smash the car window?
The clock was ticking. He looked into the dog’s eyes one last time and made his decision. He was going to save the dog, legal consequences be damned.
So he found a large rock, picked it up and threw it at the window.
But the window was strong, and the rock just bounced off. So Lewis threw it again, harder.
Once more, the rock bounced off. Soon, other people arrived. They saw what he was doing.
They went up to the car. When they realized that he was trying to save a dog and not vandalizing/robbing the car, they supported him. They told him to keep on hitting. The dog’s life depended on Lewis smashing that window.
Once more, Lewis threw the rock at the window. The glass went smashing inwards. At last, he could get to the dog.
Mark opened the door and lifted the dog out. By now, a crowd had gathered. They started cheering, and quite rightly!
The dog draped himself over Lewis’s arm. The animal was exhausted. It needed water fast.
Luckily, someone provided a bottle of water for the dog. He started lapping it up.
A few minutes later, the dog was happy and keen to show affection to Mark.
Mark’s amazing rescue then appeared on YouTube. It soon went viral. To date, it has gained over 10 million views. It also has more than 99,000 likes and 9,000 comments. People have been saying things like this:
Almost one hour after the rescue, the owners of the car finally showed up and took their dog back.
If it hadn’t been for Lewis, the dog would have died.
Hopefully, the owners learned their lesson and they would be more careful with their dog’s safety in the future.
