Man puts sick dog in a wheelbarrow so they could visit their favorite peak one last time

The heartbreaking reality is that our dogs age as we do.

The process is even faster for our best friends and in the end, all we want is a way to say our goodbyes properly, to tell them that we love them, and that we are thankful for their love as well.

For those of us who lost a pet, we had different ways of saying goodbyes but all of them hurt the same. But for this man, the physical strain is something he would gladly bear if it meant giving his dog a good look at the world one last time.

Last year, hikers of Brecon stumbled upon a strange sight.

While others were lugging their backpacks and hydration kit, a man was going to the peak of Pen y Fan in Brecon Beacons National Park.

He had his hiking gear with him just like the others, but what set him apart from everyone else was the wheelbarrow he was pushing up the slopes.

On the wheelbarrow, a labradoodle slept calmly with the mountain winds grazing against his fur. This was familiar territory for him. He and his owner, Carlos Fresco, climbed this place when he was stronger.

But this climb will be Monty’s last.

Monty, Fresco’s beloved labradoodle, was his constant outdoors buddy. According to Fresco, his dog loved exploring hills and the countryside.

“I have visited your beautiful region many times over the years and my labradoodle Monty has always been at my side.” Fresco said, as quoted by Brecon and Radnor Express. “We have climbed all over the country and Monty has summited the three peaks and was always up for adventure.”

Things changed when Monty was diagnosed with leukemia.

At first, Monty responded well to his medication and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, his cancer came back and he declined rapidly after.

Fresco knew that Monty won’t last long this time. And so, with the last of Monty’s strength, they hiked up and greeted the travelers climbing and descending the picturesque trails of Pen y Fan.

Many of them stopped to say hello, much to Monty’s delight. Fresco said that he might be weak but he still greatly appreciated the attention given to him.

And when they learned Monty’s story, some of them even offered to help Fresco push Monty further up the trail. While their last hike was bittersweet, it was a journey that Fresco was grateful to have made.

It was definitely a trip Fresco and Monty will always remember.

Fresco said that Monty has touched so many lives and that the beauty of taking care of a dog is having that constant companion who will never judge you. It was a sentiment that pet owner will surely relate to.

Monty passed away peacefully on the foot of Fresco’s bed. Fresco shared that Monty held on just enough to celebrate Father’s Day. He was age 10.

He may have passed on but Fresco believes that Monty’s legacy will live on – to those who met him and petted him, and those he made realize that life is not so bad after all. You just have to take life one adventure at a time.
