Man employs last-ditch effort to earn rescue llama’s trust by playing “hard to get”

In a common household, people have cats or dogs. Some may have amphibians or reptiles.

But one particular dream opened up for one man, to create a safe haven for any animal where they can love freely, but treat them as equally as any person with dogs and cats living with them.

But this llama proved a challenge.

Lee Asher lost his pit bull, Stella, back in late 2020. So he founded the Asher House, an animal sanctuary as an ode to Stella.

The sanctuary is situated in Estacada, Oregon.

Lee travels to 49 states and promotes dog adoption and rescuing abandoned and unwanted animals.

He practices what he preaches.

And then came Franky.

He previous owners could no longer take care of Franky, so they decided to auction him. Luckily, Lee came to the rescue and took the llama before the auction began.

Lee was happy and excited to have Franky in the sanctuary. He already loved him, but Lee knows that he needs to gain Franky’s trust in humans back again.

Patiently and slowly, he made his way to Franky. “I really just started slow, inching my way closer and closer to him every single day,” Lee recalled. “Really letting him know I wasn’t a threat. But the biggest thing was being patient with him.”

Franky was given space so he can feel more relaxed at the shelter, with the new environment.

Lee wants him to feel loved.

Lee adores the animals he rescues.

It’s always the same affection for each of the rescues.

He makes sure that each animal at the shelter knows that there’s a human that waits for you to love them because you are worth loving too.

As for Franky, Lee had a hard time gaining the trust back.

The llama’s past experience of being abandoned and being sold made all the difference in not trusting any human.

But Lee still pressed forward.

Little by little, he gets closer and closer to Franky.

He knows that eventually, we will win Franky’s trust.

He took his time.

He gave Franky some space, and before he knew it, Franky was already eating food from the palm of his hands.

That’s when he knew he already won.

“I knew I was in. I was in the Franky fan club,” Lee shared with The Dodo. “I’ve made it in the Franky circle of trust! He was finally starting to love me. Almost as much as I loved him.”

By the time Franky is more at ease, Lee was already looking for another llama so Franky will have another friend. However, there were no other llamas up for adoption.

He later found out that donkeys are a good match with llamas.

He found two donkeys set for adoption and rescued them. A few weeks after, Franky and the donkeys were best of friends.

The video made more than 3 million views with more than 3 thousand comments.

They admired Lee’s passion to help the poor animals live the life that they should and gave them the chance of the new life and love that they deserve.
