Man bites into an apple in the woods, not expecting a deer to bring her fawn over for a bite
In southern Ontario, there’s a hunter-free forest where the deer will come running at the sound of the first bite of a nice, crispy apple.
You don’t have to be a Disney princess to lure them in – they’ve learned to trust humans to some extent.
But even if you do go, it looks like the deer already have a favorite person – someone they trust so much that they’ll even bring their fawns to him for a taste of apple.
Of course, in most cases, it’s a bad idea to feed wild animals – in fact, it can harm them. Deer, for example, need to be self-sufficient. If they rely on humans for food and the humans stop coming…well, you see where this is going. In addition, associating humans with food can make animals more aggressive.
But one video uploaded to YouTube in 2018 has become a fan favorite despite the man in it breaking these rules. He even uploaded a video more recently that shows he’s still at it – and that’s going viral as well.
Viewers are charmed by watching the delicate does poke out of the woods as the man tosses bites of apple into the grass.
He’s not interested in touching them, it appears he just wants to be near nature (and since he has food, nature is all-too-happy to be near him).
âWhat a beautiful, magical experience! That lucky, lucky man!â said one commenter of the deer delicately picking at the fruit.
In the beginning, a lone doe comes out to watch him and make sure things are safe. Then she’s joined by some friends.
âThis man waited until the deer were very close and he began eating an apple and throwing pieces on the ground. The deer ran to share it with him. The surprising part was that they actually brought their fawns over too,â one commenter remarked.
Her tail flicks for them to come along and get some food – and even the fawns are allowed to come closer.
It’s rare for deer to let their babies get close to humans.
âDoes typically hide their fawns in the long grass, often separately, in order to protect them from predatorsâŚFawns are always watching their mother and she will use a complex set of tail and ear movements to communicate with themâŚThis man had an incredibly rare treat as she brought her fawns very close.â
Surprisingly, very few commenters were critical of the man for feeding the deer. Apparently, people were willing to overlook the dangers in favor of the quaint moment and the beautiful scenery.
Viewers longed to be in the lush green grass surrounded by deer.
Of course, that means many people asked about the location, not realizing that tourists are exactly what would ruin this scenario.
Nevertheless, someone provided potential location details in the comments.
âIf Iâm not mistaken, heâs in Apsley, on Jack Jake. Itâs located just off Hwy 28, an hour north of Peterborough, ON. Iâve been there many times. The deer are only a little skittish, and they warm up to nice people quite quickly. Itâs a little piece of paradise. The sanctuary is real but it doesnât get advertised or even well signed. The village of Apsley likes it that way.â
If you do make it there, be sure it’s ok to feed the animals – and follow the man in the video’s lead and don’t get close to them or touch them. Just watch and enjoy.
