Philadelphia man wakes up to find random dog hiding in his house during a thunderstorm

What would you do if a stray dog wandered into your home in the middle of the night? If your Jack Jokinen, you first ask yourself how the dog had gotten into your house in the first place. When Jokinen and his wife were awoken by noises at 4 a.m. on a Saturday, they did not know what to expect.

What they did find that night changed both of their lives as well as that of a special little dog.

As Jokinen crept through the dark and made his way downstairs, he made a startling discovery. A small Labrador puppy was sitting in his living room. What was even more surprising was that all of the doors and windows were shut tight. So, how exactly did the dog get inside?

“The first thing I think is, ‘There has to be someone in our house,’” Jokinen told The Dodo. “So, I do a security sweep, making sure there’s no one hiding in closets or anything like that. And when I finish, I think, ‘How did this happen? A magical puppy?’”

Only after checking the footage on his security camera did he learn how the dog had gotten into his house. Jokinen was able to see how the door hadn’t latched after he returned from walking his 2-year-old pup. Then it was only a matter of the wind blowing the door open and the little dog wandering inside in the middle of the night.

“Then at 3:16, on the camera, we can see the dog, we’ve named her Suzy, coming down the street and she stops outside our house,” Jokinen said. “She was out in the rain and cold, and she kind of hesitated and then went into the house.”

As he watched more of the video, Jokinen saw how a passerby had noticed his door open while walking by. After checking to make sure everything was okay, he closed the door and went about his way, unaware that he had locked the stray inside. If not for that, chances are Suzy might have moved on.

Jokinen and his wife quickly cleaned the dog up. Instead of taking her to the local shelter, where they didn’t know what would happen to her, they took her to the vet instead. At the vet, the Jokinen’s were shocked to discover that Suzy was actually Nine years old.

They also discovered that the poor dog had a variety of issues, including being covered in ticks and fleas, having an infected paw, and some dental issues. At the end of the day, the couple decided to help Suzy out, paying for her to get treated.

Jokinen tweeted about the experience, and before he knew it his post had gone viral. Within two days’, he had received $15,000 in donations to help cover Suzy’s medical bills. Jokinen and his wife also decided to adopt Suzy and welcomed her into their home. There she is safe and warm and is putting on weight.

“We’re able to do all this in a big part thanks to the generosity of the internet,” Jokinen said. “In a way, this isn’t our dog — it’s the internet’s dog.”

Here is a video from Jokinen explaining all about how that fateful night went down.
