Abandoned newborn baby survives 18 hours inside a gym bag before man finds him
When a baby is born, the world rejoices! Or at least the family and friends of the baby are so happy with the new member of their household.
But this baby’s birth into the world was different.
This baby has only been alive for a day when he was already rejected and abandoned by his mother.
Luckily, a good man named Horace Thomas found the little guy alive and kicking and most likely very hungry. Horace, 63, found this little angel in the lobby of a clinic in Dekalb County, Georgia.
But how can other people miss passing by an abandoned inside the clinic?
Because Horace found him inside a gym bag. If the baby hadn’t cried, they might have found the baby too late.
Horace was so shocked when he opened the bag and found the little baby inside. Luckily, he still had his wits about him and he quickly called the police.
The 911 dispatcher couldn’t believe what they just heard and had to repeat what Horace reported.
Horace found the baby at past midnight on Thursday. But when the police asked the doctors and employees at the clinic, they found out that the bag with the baby was most likely left there hours earlier.
Dr. Sudah Challa, the doctor responsible for running the clinic, already saw the bag on Wednesday at around 7:45 am outside the clinic. Dr. Challa thought nothing of it since there was no movement or noise coming from it.
And then a worker also said that they saw the same bag around 5:30 pm of the same Wednesday on top of a couple of boxes. This worker was the same person who brought the bag inside.
This was according to the police report given.
Inside the gym bag, they found a 4lb, 8-oz baby boy wrapped in a white blanket with a white shirt on top of him.
“It’s amazing how the baby was in there for approximately 18 hours,” Lt. Jason Waasdorp of the Chamblee Police Department said. “And he’s gonna be okay… he’s gonna make it.”
They knew the baby had just been born because his umbilical cord and placenta were still attached.
The authorities rushed him to the nearest children’s hospital and the baby was turned over to the Division of Family and Children Services.
The mother should never have abandoned her baby so callously. After all, Georgia has a “safe haven” law that allows a legal way to abandon newborns within seven days.
It does, however, require the mother to give her name and other information and leave the child with health care workers, face-to-face.
The cops asked for help in looking for the baby’s mother. Unfortunately, because she violated the safe haven law and the rights of her baby, she will be charged with child endangerment, abandonment, and neglect, among others.
And it looked like the mother knew that because three weeks later, they still have not found the baby’s mother.
But the baby was still lucky that Horace was in the clinic when he cried.
Who knows what could have happened to him if no one was there to hear his cries.
