Sometimes, you find really precious and one-of-a-kind items in flea markets.

Walter Brown was shopping at a flea market with his wife when his eyes caught a glimpse of the American flag.

He was quite curious why someone would sell one, so he stopped to take a closer look.

What he saw next made him realize that he was actually looking at something priceless.

It was not just an ordinary flag, but something more special.

There were small words written on the flag and he knew just what they were for.

He promptly called his wife, Lanie, and asked her to look into the flag, too.

The woman saw what Walter noticed and she, too, realized that the flag was unique.

The writing on it was filled with heartfelt words for someone who had given their life for the country.

It was emotional to read such incredibly sweet words for a hero.

The two of them knew what they had to do after reading the messages on the flag.

Both of them knew they had to buy the flag, no matter how much it cost.

“If they asked us for $100 we would have given them a $100 bill. It was priceless to us because we knew it meant something,” Lanie told TODAY.com.

The seller told them that the flag cost only $5. They immediately bought the item with one thing in their minds.

When Lanie and Walter got home from the flea market, they approached their son, who is a Marine, and showed the flag to him.

He confirmed that the flag was for a fallen Marine.

The messages resonated with the couple and they wanted to know who was the fallen hero that was referred to in the sweet messages.

There were 24 messages all in all, and they were for Lance Cpl. Fred Maciel.

He died in 2005, in a helicopter crash while serving in Iraq at the time.

There was only one thing to do. The couple decided to bring the flag to the family of the fallen Marine.

It seemed inappropriate if they sent the flag through the mail, so they delivered the flag personally to Patsy Maciel, Fred Maciel’s mother.

The woman received the flag at her son’s gravesite where the Browns agreed to go.

There were other people who joined the occasion as a way to pay tribute to the late Fred Maciel. A

fter nine years since the military man passed, his family finally got the flag filled with messages for him.

Patsy did not even know that such a flag existed until she heard about it from Walter and Lanie.

The mom felt her son played a part in what happened – that it was a sign he wanted her to heal.

She used to be so broken after losing her son, but she has finally come to terms with it.

Receiving the flag at this time meant so much to her and her journey toward acceptance.
