When it comes to buying or building the ideal home, we all want different things. This man just wanted to fish without having to get off his rocking chair.

Paul Phillips’s living room is unlike any other in America. At first glance, it looks pretty typical. But it has a secret. There’s a trapdoor built into the floor.

Trapdoors usually belong in the offices of evil bosses in cartoons. But Phillips isn’t using it to send underperforming employees to their dooms. Instead, it’s for hoisting fish up to their dooms. That’s right. His living room is like ice fishing but with his floor taking the place of the ice.

It all started when Phillips went down to his favorite fishing spot, Lake Oologah, and someone informed him that he couldn’t fish there.

This got Phillips upset. He didn’t see that he was doing anything wrong. He thought that there must be a way to fish without getting bothered by laws or the general public. That’s when he came up with his dream home.

So Phillips bought some undeveloped land at the edge of a suburb. Everything seemed normal at first.

When he started digging down into the ground, the neighbors thought that Phillips just wanted a basement. But the ditch was huge. Was he building a bunker?

Then it got weird. Phillips filled the ditch he had dug with water.

That’s when Phillips explained to his future neighbor that he wasn’t building a huge underground survival facility with its own swimming pool, but a pond filled with fish and a normal sized home on top.

Surprisingly, the neighbors thought that it was a great idea. After all, a pond would only brighten the neighborhood up.

Soon, the house started getting built on the ground that hadn’t been dug. Then the back of the house was added, with it being supported over the lake with concrete struts.

But Phillips won’t just be fishing through a trapdoor in the living room. He also has a porch on three sides of the home. Each side will offer ample space to fish.

Overall, the home is 1,850 square feet. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The downstairs, in addition to the trapdoor living room, has another bedroom, two bathrooms and a kitchen.

While Phillips was building his home, word started spreading around his town. Pretty soon, a local news team got interested.

They made a story about Phillips’s dream home. The video made its way onto YouTube, where it made quite an impact. To date, it has had almost 300,000 views. People have been divided on the home. In particular, they have been saying things like this:

A little after that video appeared, Phillips completed his home. Now he is able to fish to his heart’s content.

He does so every single day.

And to think, some people thought that what Phillips was doing was crazy. Instead, he has his dream home and is able to spend his days doing what he wants in comfort.

Very often, he is able to watch TV while fishing. How many people get to do that!?
