Man frees stranded octopus, gets "thank you" he'll never forget

In 2013, a man decided to walk along a beach. In the middle of his walk, he saw something that stopped him in his track.

It was an octopus fighting for his life!

Looking at the octopus, it seemed like it got stuck when the tide went out. It was having a really hard time freeing itself. Upon seeing how it was struggling, the man didn’t think twice about helping it get out.

To free the octopus, he looked for a plastic cup and filled it with seawater. Then, he carefully and gently lifted up the stranded creature.

The man released the octopus back to where it belonged.

He stood for a while and watched how the octopus re-adjust to its natural environment. Slowly, it started breathing. It wobbled around as if testing out its renewed freedom.

The man expected the octopus to go straight into the ocean- but it did not.

The octopus started spreading out its long tentacles. Then, it slipped over the bottom of the water and gracefully crept up to his feet.

It was almost like magic when the creature placed two of its tentacles over the man’s shoes.

It was as if it’s showing gratefulness for being saved. After some time, the octopus crept away and swam back to its natural habitat.

The man and the octopus had a really brief encounter. However, the depth of what the man did for the sea creature is something people won’t forget easily. The way the octopus expressed its gratitude is surely memorable, too. It’s something you don’t get to see every day.

Octopuses are actually smart creatures.

They are considered as the world’s most intelligent invertebrate. Apart from its relatively large brain, each of its eight arms also has its own rudimentary intelligence. This enables the octopuses’ arms to function on their own.

In their natural habitat, octopuses can collect things. They can even arrange stones to create the entrance to their individual dens. Most of them can also imitate their environment either to catch prey or to avoid predators.

In laboratories, octopuses display the ability to recognize patterns, solve simple and complex puzzles, and so much more. They are octopuses that can unlock and open boxes to get to the crabs inside.

In a study, the researchers from Hebrew University presented an L-shaped box with food to a group of octopuses. The creatures were able to figure out how to push and pull the morsel through a small hole in their tank’s all.

Based on the man’s experience, it’s also possible that octopuses aren’t just intelligent creatures. They could also be capable of feeling emotions and showing gratitude. Obviously, that’s not conclusive and tests may be necessary to really draw that conclusion.

Well, that’s not entirely possible. There are reports that octopuses can actually remember humans. Some of them choose to “shake hands” with the individuals they prefer and squirt ink on people they don’t like too much.
