For a while, Juan Vaquero had been concerned about the way his neighbor was treating her grandson. But even he was shocked when he heard the pleas for help.

Vaquero had been wrestling with his conscience for a while. His landlady/neighbor, Esmeralda Lira, and her neighbor, Jose Balderas, had been in custody of Lira’s grandchild for some time. Vaquero had noticed that they were mistreating the child.

However, Vaquero was worried about losing his apartment if he said anything. Instead, he hoped that they would learn to treat the boy better. And he wasn’t sure that the grandmother and her boyfriend were abusing the child. They had shouted at him frequently, but he’d never seen them hit him.

The child had sometimes asked Vaquero for food. Vaquero was worried about this but reasoned that the parents had just been putting the boy on a diet.

But then one day, he heard something shocking.

He heard the boy calling out for help. He looked over to Lira and Balderas’s home. It looked empty. No lights were on, even though it was night.

So the man walked closer to the home.

Then Vaquero noticed that the calling was not coming from the home, as he had thought. Instead, it was coming from the back yard.

Cautiously, he approached the yard, worried that Lira or Balderas would be angered by him trespassing on their property.

Eventually, Vaquero heard that the calling was coming from a shed. He got to the door of the shed, tried to pull it open and realized that it was locked.

So Vaquero started talking to the child. He hoped that this was all some misunderstanding and that the boy was in no danger. But what the boy said next horrified him.

Realizing that the situation looked bad, Vaquero started recording on his phone.

He spoke with the boy. The child confirmed that his grandmother had locked him into the shed.

Then Vaquero asked the boy if he had anything like a blanket or a bed. The boy said that he didn’t.

Next, the man asked the boy how long he’d been trapped in the shed. The boy said that he’d been in there since 6 pm. It was now almost 10 pm.

Then the man discovered that the boy had not eaten since the morning.

Vaquero then said that he was going to get some food for him. The boy responded that even if Vaquero slipped it through a hole in the shed, he wouldn’t be able to eat it because his hands were tied behind his back.

The man said that he would help. He called up Child Protective Services, explaining the situation.

Soon, police arrived on the scene. When they got inside the shed, they were disgusted at what they saw. The child’s hands were indeed tied behind his back. The shed was also crawling with bugs and rats.

They took the boy to the station and got him some food.

When Lira and Balderas returned home, a policeman was waiting for them. He proceeded to arrest them and took them to jail.

At the jail, the police attempted to ask why the grandparents had done such a terrible thing. All they said was that the boy had stolen food.

Vaquero now has to find a new place to live, as the criminals were his landlady and her boyfriend.

However, he believes that this is a small price to pay for ensuring the wellbeing of a child.
