Woman sitting next to rude man on plane hears deep voice saying “We’re switching seats now”
Traveling alone is not easy, particularly when it’s a long flight. It’s not that it’s lonely but it’s truly unpredictable. You wouldn’t know who are the people you’re going to encounter.
Some people may find it exciting but it’s not the same for everyone.
Savannah Phillips has her own fear when traveling by airplane. According to her, it’s her “worst nightmare”.
Whenever she flies, she always chooses a seat in a row where she’s alone and doesn’t have to sit next to a stranger. She has her reasons why.
“I always try to sit in a row where I don’t have to sit next to anyone. I’m not the biggest person on the airplane, but I’m not the smallest. My worst nightmare is someone being uncomfortable because they have to sit next to me.”
Unfortunately, she experienced this fear and it was even worse than what she could think of.
It all happened during her flight from Oklahoma City to Chicago.
“I’ve been on airplanes for the past three weeks. My flight to Chicago was changed to an earlier flight because of storms, so I didn’t get to pick my seat like a normally do.”
Savannah detailedly recounted what happened via her Facebook post. As she was not able to pick her preferred seat, she had to be seated next to an older gentleman who was wearing yellow sunglasses at that time.
She thought that everything was fine between them.
The man stood up so Savannah could settle to her assigned seat next to the window. He even told her that he was a comedian. But what he did next was infuriating.
Savannah was extremely shocked when she saw that the man was texting someone and wrote that he was sitting beside “a smelly fatty.”
“The flight attendant started the safety speech and he got his phone out (with huge font and the screen brightness turned all the way up). His phone was maybe 12 inches from my face and he proceeded to text someone that he was sitting next to “a smelly fatty.”
She pretended that she did not see anything. And she tried to hide that she was terribly hurt.
“I don’t even know what the rest of his text said. I turned my head away as fast as I could. I was shocked and it was like confirmation of the negative things I think about myself on a daily basis. Before I knew it, I could feel hot, salty tears coming down my face. I sat and cried silently, hoping this guy didn’t try to make small talk, because I didn’t trust how I would react and I didn’t want to get kicked off the plane. I was so hurt.”
Unexpectedly, there was another person who saw the harsh text message.
He is Chase Irwin from Nashville. Upon seeing the text message, he felt how it affected Savannah emotionally. He even shared in an interview with Inside Edition that he felt “sick to his stomach”. And wait, there’s more. He also took the chance to record that man and even posted the video on social media.
“This guy just text his wife that he is sitting next to a smelly fatty and is going to vomit. I watched her read his text and is now looking sad.”
It didn’t end there. This amazing guy did something more to defend the woman from the unkind passenger. He bravely talked to the man and said “Hey, I need to talk to you.” He also told him that he would like to switch seats with him.
He also opened up about the text message.
“You are texting about her, and I’m not putting up with that.”
When he got the chance to sit beside Savannah, he did his best to comfort her.
She also shared Chase’s kindness in her post. For her, he was her hero and a blessing that was sent by God. She had nothing but kind words and appreciation for him. She was so grateful.
“He encouraged me not to let that guy get to me and that everything was going to be fine. We talked about Ross and the kids, his two year old son, our jobs, amongst other things.”
“He said he just happened to see that guy’s text messages he started shaking he was so mad and knew he had to do something. He stopped the flight attendant and told her what he was about to do. I told him thank you for what he did and that it meant the world to me- and that he would be my husband’s new favorite person.”
Savannah’s story just tells us many life lessons. It’s also comforting to be reminded that kindness still exists in this world.
