When Romar Lyle told his friends and family that he wanted to become a police officer, they thought he was deluded. How could someone so big ever do such an active job?
No one wanted to hurt Lyle’s feelings, so no one asked how it would be physically possible for him to become a member of the police force. But it was obvious to Lyle what they were thinking. He had always been a big guy, after all.
Still, Lyle started studying investigative forensics, ignoring the fact that he weighed 400 pounds. He always told himself that he would lose the weight at college. But what Lyle didn’t count on was the fact that college can be a terrible environment for getting healthy. Thanks to drink and the need for cheap fast food to get from day to day, Lyle’s weight stayed pretty much the same.
So Lyle graduated with a strong qualification for becoming a cop but with few employment prospects. Thanks to his extreme weight, no police force would take him on.
As Lyle wanted to focus on forensic science, he had hoped that his weight wouldn’t be so much of an issue. But when it came to getting his dream job, he had no success.
At this point, Lyle realized that it was now or never.
He had had to take a menial job that he wasn’t finding fulfilling. But if he could just get into shape, his dream career would be within his grasp at last.
Lyle switched from fast food to a healthy diet.
He didn’t like eating only fruits and vegetables, but he didn’t like where he was in life more!
He also signed up for his local CrossFit and prayed that he would stick with his weight loss goals this time.
Month after month, Lyle saw himself get thinner and thinner. But the man’s transformation didn’t take place overnight. Instead, it was a slow, gradual journey. Yet every pound lost was a pound closer to his dream job.
After one year, Lyle had lost 130 pounds. When friends and family members who lived far away came to visit, they didn’t recognize the new Lyle.
But the man knew that he still had a little way to go. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, he would break the diet, but every other day, he stuck to it religiously.
Eventually, Lyle’s weight shrank down to the point where he could start his training to become a police officer at the Richmond Police Department.
Unlike all of the other recruits, he’d had to lose 176 pounds to get to this point. And he knew that if he could do that, he could do anything.
In November 2019, after many long years of self-determination, Lyle officially became a police officer.
Many thought that he would never reach this point, but Lyle had defied them all.
“It was one of the most challenging things I have ever had to do. But it has taught me so many life skills and valuable lessons that I will carry for the rest of my life.” – Lyle.
Today, Lyle proudly wears his police uniform over his healthy body. Every day he looks forward to helping his community.
And whenever he meets someone in a bad place, he tells them his own journey and how anything is possible if people have enough drive.
