Lots of people want to own a huge home. But most of us can’t afford one. This man got a little creative with shipping containers and now lives like a king.
Will Breaux lives in Houston, Texas, and it’s fair to say that no one has a home quite like his.
He always knew what he wanted his home to look like and wanted to custom make it. Of course, building a home to your own specifications is something that only the ultra-rich are able to afford.
In particular, Breaux wanted to have a three-story townhouse in the Houston suburbs.
He looked into how much this would cost, and thought that it would always remain a dream.
But then he saw something online that sparked his imagination. He saw that some people were living in old shipping containers.
So he got wondering if it was feasible to stack multiple shipping containers on top of one another. In essence, that would give him the same interior space as a townhouse for a fraction of the cost of building one.
He planned his home out and researched its feasibility.
When he saw that he could get a used, sturdy shipping container for as little as $2,000, his mind was made up.
So he purchased a lot and got designing. He had never worked in construction, carpentry or any other field that involved building homes. But he had an insatiable passion to have his dream home.
First, Breaux started small. He purchased just a single shipping container and adapted the inside to suit him.
After the successful design of this first room, he decided to go all the way. He bought 10 more shipping containers, stacked them on top and alongside each other and started cutting windows and doors into them all. Then he added stairs, insulation, plumbing, AC and all the conveniences we expect in a home.
Of course, this superstructure didn’t come about overnight. In fact, it took Breaux almost two decades to end up with the home that he’d always wanted.
Although even Breaux admits that the home isn’t completed (is any house?) He states that at some point, he wants to paint the outside, for instance.
Inside, there’s a garage that can fit two cars, a range of well sized rooms and even a deck on the roof that Breaux and friends can sit out on.
His living room looks more like a New York City penthouse lounge than something you would find in Texas.
And far from being pokey, the kitchen is large enough to fit an island!
But perhaps most impressively, he was able to add a balcony on the second floor
The top two floors only just opened recently, so at the moment they look a little bare. But Breaux has plenty of time to make these levels look just as impressive as the ground floor!
Most people may not want to live inside a bunch of shipping containers, but who can judge Breaux for what he’s achieved?
He has the home that he’s always wanted and he didn’t break the bank while making it!
According to Breaux, “lots of people stop by regularly to look at it or take pictures.” Who else has a home that’s that impressive?
