Man returns missing cat – only to get scolded when he asks for the promised reward

Reddit is often called the front page of the internet, and there was a man browsing the social platform and needed a place to vent. The man recently returned a lost cat back to their owners, and the owners of the lost feline offered a $500 reward for whoever would bring their furry four-footer back home.

When the man did exactly that, he simply asked if the could get the promised reward money.

The response by the owners, however, left him astounded.

It all started when the man and his wife noticed a couple of ‘missing cat’ posters in the neighborhood.

“My wife and I live in a very walkable area. We were walking to lunch the other day and noticed a few reward posters for a lost cat,” the man posted on Reddit.

Then suddenly, they actually see a lost cat, and the similarities were uncanny.

“Well sure enough we see this cat just sitting on the roof of a car and it looked just like the one in the reward poster. I walked up to it and it was super nice. I took a pic of it then we walked a block back to the poster to compare. It was the same cat. We went back and got the cat.”

Luckily, when they approached the cat, the four-footer was really friendly and allowed the man to carry it, but the cat did seem quite scared and timid. The poor kitten probably just wanted to go home as soon as possible.

When the man showed up at the doorstep of the owners, they couldn’t hold back their joy.

“As we were walking up the sidewalk the kids in the house ran out and screamed in a happy way and grabbed the cat. The parents came out and thanked us for returning their cat. The mom had tears in her eyes.”

After a quick chat with the owners, the man then simply and politely asked about the offered reward. The mood then quickly started to shift, as the owners changed their tone drastically and practically scolded and insulted the man right in front of him.

“As they were walking back inside I said, “oh, I noticed there was a $500 reward. Would that apply in this situation? If not, I totally understand,” he asked.

The owners’ reaction was quite shocking and plain rude.

“The dad just looked at me with daggers and the wife looked real confused. She said in a kinda condescending way, “you really want us to give you $500?” I said, “I’m not trying to be awkward or anything, but you did offer a reward and we did find your cat.” The dad said, “Jesus, hold on” and went inside and got $320. He comes back outside and said, “All I have is $320 cash on hand. I can get you the rest if it’s really that big of a deal to you.” I said, “no, that’s fine and he handed me the $320.” As they walked back inside the wife said under her breath, “I can’t believe he took the money” and the husband said, “yeah, what a d***.” They clearly said it loud enough for me to hear.”

Apparently, the owners must’ve thought that this man was simply in it for the money, and had no intention of returning the cat simply out of kindness. The man was so distraught by this whole incident and wrote a lengthy post on Reddit, on the site’s “Am I The Ass****” section. Half of his friends say that he was absolutely in his right to ask for a reward, while the other half believes that he shouldn’t really have mentioned it.

The man didn’t really know if he was in the wrong – so he asked the opinion of the internet.

“If you put up a reward you should be willing to pay it.”

“Amen. Don’t offer what you can’t afford to give…”

“If they didn’t want to pay the reward they should not have offered it. If one of my dogs got lost, I would be ecstatic to pay the reward because it meant I had them back.”

The post went viral on Reddit, and most people believe that the man had the right to ask for the reward money. A promise is a promise, after all!
