One cold winter’s day in Missouri, Brandon McNamee was driving his car. Casually making his way down the road, he noticed something that caught his attention.

It was a woman walking down the side of the highway, enduring the frigid temperatures outside. She had her thumb sticking out. The woman needed a ride.

McNamee was cautionary, he had never before picked up a hitchhiker. He wasn’t one to give a ride to anyone he didn’t know but was compelled to take a risk that day.

When he realized the woman wasn’t properly dressed for the 19-degree weather he leapt into action.

He pulled over to the side of the road and offered a ride to the walking woman. It turns out the woman, named Kim, needed a ride to work at Wendy’s. While they drove to the destination they shared the moment to chat.

Normally, Kim would take her car to work, however, it had recently broken down and her finances didn’t allow for her to make the repairs.

In light of this, Kim started leaving her home hours early every day to make the trek to her job. Some days she would get lucky and be able to secure a ride the rest of the way, but other days she would endure the cold temperatures just to get clocked in.

Fortunately, McNamee was there for her that fateful day. They eventually arrived at Wendy’s where Kim thanked him for the ride, and he likewise thanked her for not being a serial killer.

“I ain’t never picked nobody up off the side of the road before. I’m just glad you didn’t kill me,” he said and the two went their separate ways.

McNamee felt compelled to share the story on Facebook with his friends. One commented, suggesting that he should raise some money to help the woman out with an Uber gift card.

The suggestion was all it took for McNamee. In less than an hour’s time, he had raised enough money for the gift card along with some additional cash funds. He made his way back to Wendy’s to share the news with the stranger.

McNamee returned to Wendy’s looking for Kim. She was surprised to see him returning and looked on unable to tell what would follow next.

He explained the situation to her, leaving her rather speechless:

“We got you a gift card to Uber right there for $100.” All Kim could say was “Thank you!” But Brandon was bearing more gifts for her. “And then I know that you said your car costs $200 to fix. Here’s the $200 for the transmission… and then, here’s another $200 in case, you know, anything else comes up.”

A teary-eyed Kim couldn’t begin to thank McNamee for his touching act of kindness. You see, strangers work both ways in this world. After learning about her situation he was happy to intervene in whatever way that he could.

Acts like these truly keep our faith in humanity afloat.
