Man goes out of his way to give hitchhiker a ride – then he shows up at her work
Earlier this year, Brandon McNamee was driving down a Missouri highway when he began recording something you don’t see very often anymore – a hitchhiker.
The person in need of a lift was an older woman and it was only 19 degrees outside. While he had never done such a thing before, McNamee took pity on her and pulled over to see where she needed to go.
It turns out Kim works at Wendy’s, and while she was normally able to drive herself to work, her car had broken down and she didn’t have the means to get it fixed or find any other way to work. That’s quite a risk to take just to get to your job!
Since she had become car-less, she normally left her home hours early so she could walk to work. Occasionally she stuck her thumb out to see if someone might pick her up, but since we’re all warned to avoid hitchhikers, she knew she wouldn’t have much luck.
Until McNamee came along, that is.
He recorded the whole ride as the two chatted about the situation.
“I ain’t never picked nobody up off the side of the road before. I’m just glad you didn’t kill me,” he said as Kim gets out of the car.
He captioned his video:
“So I picked up a hitchhiker this morning and instead of whacking me over the head with an axe and stealing my car, turns out it’s just a sweet little lady just trying to make it to her job at Wendy’s on time by leaving hours early and walking alongside the highway in 19-degree weather.
Wendy’s needs to give this lady a raise dude!”
That’s some serious commitment to a job!
Upon seeing the video, a friend gave him an idea. Why not raise some money to get the woman an Uber gift card so she could get a reliable ride to work?
It took only an hour to raise money for a gift card as well as some extra cash for Kim to fix her car!
McNamee obviously knew where she worked having dropped her off there earlier in the day, so he waltzed into the Wendy’s that same day to present her with the gifts totalling $500.
“We got you a gift card to Uber right there for $100.”
A stunned Kim could only say “Thank you!”
Then he gave her the cash, which truly surprised her.
“And then I know that you said your car costs $200 to fix. Here’s the $200 for the transmission… and then, here’s another $200 in case, you know, anything else comes up.”
And since his video went viral, Kim even got some offers to fix her car for free:
“Kim had a few mechanics reach out to her to fix her car for free! Thank you so much for sharing this to help her out. You guys all really are amazing,” said McNamee in the comments on his second video.
While some people criticized McNamee for recording it all and sharing the videos (and they do have a point), it was the ability to see kindness in action that motivated so many to help this woman out.
