Man spent just $12K on old house – then spends 2 years turning it into cozy sanctuary

Everyone has a dream house. Most people have been dreaming of this since they were young and working hard to make this dream come true.

But when they get the house, reality sets in. They learn they need to work on the house to make it live up to their dream.

Luckily, over the past decade, we have been bombarded with lots of house renovation and house makeover shows on TV, social media, and on YouTube.

The very first home renovation show, Room by Room, first aired on HGTV in December 1994.

The show ran for 14 years on the cable channel and introduced the concept of do-it-yourself (DIY) home renovations to viewers.

Because of the show’s success, they inspired more home renovation shows, both DIY and done by experts.

Some of these shows include Trading Spaces, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, Design on a Dime, Flippin’ Out, and, perhaps the most famous home renovation show by far, Fixer Upper.

And there are even more on YouTube and one of them is Homemade Home.

No one knows the name of the host of this YouTube show for privacy reasons but it hasn’t stopped millions of viewers from watching his show.

“I enjoy building, making art and learning new disciplines along with documenting my processes by way of video and sharing them with you. The goal here is to focus on the home, whether fixing a broken light switch, making furniture or renovating an entire house, this is where you will see my hand at work in the home,” the hosts described his show.

One of his major projects was one he started in July 2017 and finished in April 2019.

He bought a house for around $12,000 (which included closing costs) to renovate for eventual selling or renting. He started his career as a furniture maker but has since wanted to work in the real estate business.

At the time he started this $12,000 remodel, he already owned six houses. One was his own home where he lives with his wife. Two houses have already been rented. Renovation for the other two houses have been finished and ready for selling.

And this is the sixth house.

He continued to document the entire two-year journey of this house’s renovation through 50+ videos he posted on his YouTube channel.

It’s a good tutorial for anyone who wants to do their own renovations. The host presented a realistic point of view when it comes to DIY home renovations.

He always started with a walkthrough of the house first so he knows what he’s up against. He started with an inspection of the plumbing, electrical lines, and what needs to be replaced.

The first day always involved ripping apart the place and start from scratch.

Even if you tell yourself that you’re only making minor changes, that sentiment doesn’t last. Because once you get the bigger picture of the spot’s state, you’ll always end up doing more.

And that’s most likely why it took the Homestead Craftsman almost two years to finish this small house.
