Man rents entire billboard to celebrate his dog’s first birthday
Not everyone is able to take out a Superbowl ad to celebrate man’s best friendship – some of us have to settle for billboards. Granted, David MacNeil’s dog Scout – the star of the Superbowl ad – had his life saved by the vets at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine after having just a 1% chance of survival, but Maxx Chewning had something to celebrate as well.
His dog, Dood, was turning 1.
Judge if you must – and both friends and commenters on social media did plenty of that – but taking out an electronic billboard to tell his Texas town how much he loves Dood was the best way Chewning could think of to celebrate her furry bestie.
Hey, they say everything is bigger in Texas – even the birthday gestures, apparently!
Of course, Dood can’t read and he has no idea what a birthday is, but just like a 1-year-old child will never remember their first birthday party and those events are more for the parents than the kids, Chewning’s gesture was more about celebrating the best thing that ever happened to him.
In fact, the two are downright inseparable:
“Dood is a very energetic puppy who loves to be around people as much as possible,” his owner told The Dodo. “He goes with me everywhere I go, and I bring him to work every day.”
Anyone who has owned a pet knows that feeling of unconditional love (the kind that’s harder to get from humans since we’re a lot more complex than animals) and the desire to let their pet know the feeling is mutual.
“Every time I walk through the door he bursts up from the ground and greets me with a bundle of energy and love,” Chewning said of his beloved dog. “Dood is a great dog and he truly has brought happiness into my life. He is my best friend.”
Still judging? Ok. But just imagine someone tried to tell you how to spend your hard-earned money.
When Chewning contacted the billboard company, they were pretty stoked to have something so sweet and unique flashing up there on their property – after all, Dood’s face is pretty hard not to smile at.
“The billboard company had never heard of anything like this and they were excited for something creative and fun to be on their digital screen,” Chewning told The Dodo.
And while not everyone was excited, the doting dog owner doesn’t care. He’s putting his money where his love is.
“I don’t even have a girlfriend so I’m not spending any money on that, so why don’t I spend it all on my dog?” he said in his YouTube video. “Seems like the better option, to be honest.”
Now, since the billboard didn’t really mean much to Dood, Chewning made sure his birthday was full of things the pup would appreciate – and he even made a video recounting their amazing day and posted it to YouTube (which you can see down below).
First, the duo drove to Starbucks for a Puppuccino.
When they drove by his billboard, Dood – unsurprisingly – didn’t seem that touched, so the pair went to the park for some playtime followed by a dog-friendly birthday cake (which they shared).
Playing and eating – Chewning was definitely speaking Dood’s language with those decisions!
At the end of the day, Chewning took Dood to see the billboard one last time when it was all lit up. He captioned their photo in front of the sign:
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOOD!!!! Thanks for loving me every single day and sneezing in my face all the time.”
A trip to the pet store – where Dood got to pick out anything he wanted – capped off the pup’s first birthday.
Could there be two happier friends?
