Pig experiences love for the first time after being trapped in dark stall for 10 years

As humans, we all have different opinions – that’s what makes us unique. But one thing we can probably all agree on is that animal abuse is never justified.

Just because animals aren’t capable of expressing themselves in speech, many people assume that they don’t share human feelings or emotions, either. This simply isn’t true.

Ongoing studies have found that at least some animals likely feel a full range of emotions, including fear, love, joy, shame, happiness, embarrassment, jealousy, resentment, rage, and anger.

So when we’re kind to animals, they know it. And when we’re cruel, they know it too.

Animal abuse is still a huge problem in the US, with an estimated 10 million animals dying from abuse every year.

It’s natural to want to protect cats and dogs from abuse, as they’re are our pets. But statistics also show that about 97% of all abused and killed animals yearly are farm animals.

No animal should have to suffer abuse. There are many farm animals that live in distress, and nobody ever finds out.

This story features a pig called Princess who was kept in a dark stall for 10 long years of her life.

Princess was thankfully rescued by Todd, a member of Arthur’s Acers Sanctuary, who gave her a furever home in a much more suitable home – but it was slow progress.

At first, Princess didn’t want anyone to get near her. She was untrusting, and it was Todd’s job to slowly gain her trust.

He would visit Princess with treats, making sure he was the only person she saw. This prevented her from getting too overwhelmed by the social interaction.

Princess had been used for breeding the whole time before her rescue, and was suspected to have been abused.

After being in the dark for so long, Princess had lost her sight. She was only able to see shadows, but she could hear Todd’s voice – and she slowly began to get used to his presence.

Todd spent hours every day with Princess, making sure she felt safe and comfortable. While Princess was coming around to her new company, she still didn’t want to be touched.

There was still work to be done, and slowly, Todd was getting there.

He took small steps to push Princess out of her comfort zone, leaving her food outside of her pen for her to walk to, and touching her nose while he was feeding her.

In time, Todd was able to take Princess outside on grass – probably for the first time ever – where she made friends with some of the other rescue animals.

Eventually, Princess allowed Todd to pet her and rub her belly.

It’s astonishing to see just how much progress can be made with the right love, care, and persistence from Todd.

Many people would have seen Princess as a lost cause, but Todd didn’t give in. He brought the life out of a pig that had only ever known darkness and abuse. Todd proved to her that there are good humans in the world.
