Determined man spent days holding up a sign to reunite a lost dog with its family

There was a vehicle stopped on the sh0ulder and the driver was running around in the median chasing something.

“I then noticed the dog running in circles in the road, confused and scared,” he told The Dodo.

The 70-pound chocolate Labrador was giving everyone the run-around and wasn’t interested in getting caught. But Gasparik finally realized that she might, in part, be playing.

While a treat couldn’t lure her to safety, Gasparik decided to try and tire her out.

He ran around for an hour in the hopes of slowing her down.

“I noticed she would run after me if I lightly jogged. She was playful but very apprehensive,” he said. “I decided to run around the parking lot nearby and after some laps around, she finally got tired, lay down and I was able to grab her neck scruff.”

The good samaritan got her in the car and headed to the nearest 24-hour veterinary clinic to get her microchip read.

There was only one problem – Roxy the dog had a chip, but it wasn’t registered to her current owner.

Gasparik had to leave on a business trip on Monday, but the dog-lover decided to spend the weekend looking for Roxy’s owner.

He started with posting to social media with photos and details on the pup. He also used PawBoost, which matches lost animal posts with relevant Lost & Found Facebook groups in an area.

In the meantime, Roxy was a friendly houseguest – and she made herself at home.

“The first night I brought her to my home, she immediately jumped on my bed and landed right on top of me licking my face,” Gasparik said. “She was excited but you could tell she was so confused and scared — but happy to be hanging out with me.”

Unfortunately, the Facebook posts didn’t turn up and leads the first night.

So Gasparik decided to get creative.

He made a cardboard sign that he knew would get some attention and then he stood out on the street holding it – with Roxy by his side – all Saturday.

“I made my sign with an old moving box and a tiki torch pole and decided to go to the corner [where I found Roxy],” he told The Dodo.

He felt silly, but he really needed to find the dog’s owner before leaving for his trip on Monday.

“Admittedly, I felt like a complete fool when I first got out of my truck and started walking to the corner,” Gasparik added. “I almost turned around because I figured everyone would ignore me thinking I was some scammer just looking for money or something.”

Sadly, he had no luck on Saturday even though many people stopped to chat and take photos of him and Roxy. He hoped that some of those photos would help expand the reach of Roxy’s plight.

Then he headed out and did it all over again on Sunday!

That was the day local photographer Eben Adrian snapped a photo of the pair that went viral.

“That’s when it skyrocketed. I was getting pinged left and right. I couldn’t keep up with all the messages I was getting,” he said, according to PEOPLE.

Of course, some were some people wanting to take Gasparik home too!

Then he got lucky!

“At 12:30, I was again standing on the corner with my sign and I got a message on Nextdoor from a lady saying she found the owner of Roxy driving around several miles away trying to find her!” he said.

It turns out Roxy’s owner has mobility issues, so he had been out driving the streets and shouting her name out the window of his truck to no avail.

The woman connected the two men and Roxy got the reunion she deserved with her relieved dad. Gasparik confirmed he was the right guy and everyone was thrilled to be back together.

“As soon as Roxy saw him her ears perked up and she ran to him and he had all the paperwork to show that he was the owner. And of course he had tons of pictures of her on his cellphone.”

Gasparik said there’s one important lesson to be learned here:

“I could have returned Roxy two hours after I found her if Ed would have known to register his chip. It could have been just that simple.”
