Man wants life-saving surgery for dog and girlfriend’s against spending the money

Even though humans will generally outlive their beloved and precious four-legged friends, a lot of owners wouldn’t know what to do without their trusted dog. One of those people is the owner of a sweet dog named Summer, who is, unfortunately, dealing with some major health issues at the moment.

Summer has been diagnosed with cancer, but vets are optimistic for a full recovery.

However, that outcome is only possible if she gets surgery and a number of chemotherapy sessions.

With proper medical care, doctors believe that Summer will be back to 100%, with no lasting effects from the tumor or the surgery at all.

The caveat? The full treatment costs around $10,000.

“So my dog is 4 years old and I just found out she has cancer. The vet said that it was caught early and that with surgery and chemotherapy it’s very likely that she’ll have a full recovery and live a full life like she never had it. The only thing is that she estimates it would cost between 9-10k for the treatment. I don’t have pet insurance, but instead I’ve been putting $100/week into a separate bank account just in case something like this happened,” Summer’s owner wrote.

Not a problem for Summer’s owner, but then he found out his girlfriend a BIG problem with him spending the money.

The man didn’t know what to do, and he resorted to the internet for some unbiased advice.

“Now when I told my gf of 2 years about my dog, she asked what I was going to do, since it’s not like she expected me to have that kind of money lying around. And if I hadn’t been saving money specifically for my dog, I probably wouldn’t be able to afford her treatment. When I told her about the money and that I was going to pay for the surgery, she was upset because 1. She didn’t know about the account and 2. I’d be spending so much money when she’s out of a job and struggling. She moved in with me a few months ago and doesn’t have to pay rent. We haven’t really discussed finances that much, but I know being laid off has hurt her.”

Even though finances are obviously tight for the girlfriend, Summer’s owner had some emergency funds in case something tragic like this happened.

After hearing the tragic news about Summer’s cancer, the fact that he could save her life must’ve been such a huge relief! However, it seems like the man’s spouse was completely against saving the life of his loyal dog in favor of saving for their future.

“She thinks that I shouldn’t spend it on my dog and wants me to save the money for if/when we get married or have kids.”

Luckily, the man wants to do the right thing: saving the life of his best friend.

Apparently, his girlfriend couldn’t appreciate this at all, and the man even believes that his girlfriend will come with an ultimatum: her or the dog.

The man posted this story on Reddit, more specifically, the “Am I the a-hole” subreddit of the site. He wanted to hear what other people thought about this whole situation, and things couldn’t have been more clear.

The post was seen by thousands and is still one of the more popular posts on the subreddit, and the majority of people officially labeled him as ‘”not the a-hole”.

After all of the votes came in, the man posted an update regarding his situation, and has assured everyone, that no matter what, he’ll always choose Summer.

“If it came down to it I would of course choose Summer over my gf,” the Reddit-user concluded.
