As Hurricane Delta approached, man took more than 300 stray animals into his home for protection

When a hurricane hits, most people run for cover or evacuate the area. And while most people keep their animals safe with them, stray animals do not have this luxury. This was the case in Cancun, Mexico, as Hurricane Delta bore down on the country.
Fortunately, the animals at the Tierra de Animals animal sanctuary had Ricardo Pimentel on their side.
Hurricane Delta

When Pimentel first heard about Hurricane Delta, he knew he had to do something for the stray animals he oversaw at the shelter. Hurricane Delta was massive and the shelter had little room for all of the animals there.
“Those 300 dogs that I took into my house are some of the ones that already live at Tierra de Animales. It’s just that we don’t have enough hurricane-proof shelters for all the dogs, so to keep them safe from that, we decided to put them in the house,” Pimentel told Bored Panda.
Getting the animals at the shelter to safety

Thinking quickly, Pimentel took 300 dogs from the shelter and gave them temporary shelter in his home. Before long, his home was filled with canines of all shapes and sizes.
“They were very well-behaved all night during the meteorological phenomenon. They are all spayed and neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed. Almost all of them are ready to be adopted,” Pimentel said.
Welcoming more than just dogs into his home

But Pimentel didn’t stop there. He also took some of the other animals from the shelter and placed them in his home. He shared some photos of his house guest online where they quickly went viral.
“I have been rescuing animals almost all my life since I was a kid, and I founded Tierra de Animales 9 years ago. We not only rescue dogs, but also cats, turtles, iguanas, cows, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, donkeys, etc.,” Pimentel said.
The hurricane did extensive damage to the animal shelter

Returning to the animal shelter after Hurricane Delta had hit revealed that Pimentel’s decision to keep the animals in his home was a good choice. Tierra de Animals had taken a lot of damage and would require extensive repairs. Due to Pimentel’s smart decision, many of the animals who lived at the shelter were able to survive the devastating hurricane.
Rebuilding for the future

With a renewed desire to help animals in need, Pimentel decided to rebuild with the idea in mind to make future shelters hurricane proof. You can donate to the Tierra de Animals, visit the organization’s Website or Facebook page.
“We work with the help of people from all over the world, who donate whatever they can. Of course, after all the damage that the hurricane Delta left behind, we need more help than ever, especially because we are going to build more and better shelters for all the animals of the sanctuary,” Pimentel vowed.
