California veterinarian wanders the streets, treating homeless peoples’ animals

Life on the streets is difficult for many homeless people, especially for their pets. They have limited access to basic items, including food, clothing, and shelter. One area that many homeless people suffer is when it comes to medical care. As far as their pets are concerned, medical care if hard to come by. Fortunately, the pets of homeless people in California have Dr. Kwane Stewart to look after them.

A mission to help homeless pets

Dr. Stewart has made it his mission to help the homeless of California and their pets, many of which live on the outskirts of society. It was following the recession in 2007 that Stewart decided that he wanted to help people and their pets.

“There was something about it that I loved,” said the 49-year-old Stewart.

While on his rounds on the street of California, Stewart always carries a medical bag. This allows him to easily treat any pets in need that he comes across. Of course, not everybody trusts him and many have turned down his offer of help.

Stewart also runs a GoFundMe page where he raises the funds necessary to perform his treatments, this includes the money for more pricey treatments.

“The cost of minor treatments like ear infections, flea treatment, or vaccines can be around $100, whereas more serious cases like a tumor removal or dental with extractions can be $1,500.”

One such animal is Dinker who belongs to a homeless man named Walter. Dinker has a very rare medical condition that requires that he receive surgery from a specialist. Currently, Stewart is working on securing the funds to pay for the procedure he performs.

As for his job, Stewart had this to say about it, “I’ve experienced the most genuine stories of love, compassion, struggle, and hope.”

He also expressed his gratitude to all that have donated on his GoFundMe page. In response, he has set a higher goal for himself with the hope of eventually bringing even more vets to the streets of California, so that even more homeless pets can receive treatment.

Some of the conditions he treats include animal allergies, various infections, infestations, and dental issues. Stewart also has a TV series, called “The Street Vet,” where he documents his journey for all to see.
