Man records the sweet way he wakes up his blind-deaf dog and garners millions of views
Blind and deaf dogs require special care. Being deprived of two of their main senses, many such dogs rely primarily on their sense of touch and smell to function in their everyday life. The main issue with dogs with blindness and deafness is waking them from slumber.
In many cases, this can be a scary experience, but one man has found a unique way of waking his blind and deaf dog.
Plum requires special treatment
Plum, a nine-month-old mini Australian shepherd, lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with her owner, Aiden Mann. Plum is deaf and partially blind, which makes caring for her a challenge. A video posted of Plum and Mann on TikTok shows the special measures Mann takes when waking Plum up.
“People ask me how I wake up my deaf and blind pup without scaring her,” Mann said in a caption on the video.
Mann has a unique way of waking her up
In the video, Mann can be seen crouching down in front of a sleeping Plum. He begins to gently blow on the dog. This is his way of waking her up without startling her too much. Though, she still gets startled a little despite his efforts. Fortunately, that doesn’t last for long.
Initially, Plum is startled
Soon, after waking her, the dog jumps up, wondering what woke her. This is when Mann moves into a warm embrace. This is all it takes for Plum to realize her owner is there and that everything is OK. After realizing it is him, she lays back down on the floor for even more love and cuddles. Mann is happy to oblige his dog, whom he loves very much.
The video has gone viral on TikTok, getting over 50 million views and 12 million likes. On social media site Instagram, the video has gotten over 600,000 views.
How does Mann communicate with Plum?
Mann has loved Plum since he first laid eyes on her and has spent the time since then trying to make her as happy as possible. This has taken a lot of trial and error on his part, as he had to learn how to communicate with her.
He mainly does this through touch signals, teaching her basic commands. Some of the commands he uses is a touch under the chin, signaling for her to sit, or softly guiding her nose in the direction he wants her to go. Mann also runs his hand along her body to let her know to go in a certain direction.
Plum loves her sister Lola
Plum has an older sister, a five-year-old Staffordshire-Great Dane mix, named Lola. The two dogs have become inseparable and take walks together, as well as swim in the local creek. They also like to snuggle together on the couch when they are relaxing at home.
