Man in wheelchair watches cranes every day so worker approaches him with a proposition

After decades of hard work, many people look forward to retirement.

Others, however, are still so passionate about their field that itā€™s hard for them to retire.

Depending on the profession, it may be possible to continue working if one so desires. Unless, of course, health issues arise, leaving the person with no choice but to leave.

This is exactly what happened to a man named Harold.

Unfortunately, due to his health, he was no longer able to work as a crane operator.

But Harold was able to relive his days working on the construction site thanks to the kindness of a stranger.

It all started when Ohio crane operator Shawn Beveridge noticed a man in a wheelchair sitting outside of a nursing home.

The man would sit there for hours on end, day after day, watching the job site and the cranes move around.

Shawn was perplexed as to why the elderly gentleman appeared every day.

And he eventually became curious enough to introduce himself.

ā€œSince day one when I arrived on this job site Iā€™ve noticed him sitting there every morning from 7 a.m., he takes lunch when we do and doesnā€™t leave until I shut the crane down and head out,ā€ Beveridge wrote on Facebook.

ā€œI originally had thought to myself, ā€˜Heā€™s just a curious old man and wanting to enjoy his days outside vs being cooped up in his room.ā€™ Well after a couple days, I myself got curious, so I walked over and introduced myself to him.ā€

Shawn discovered the manā€™s name was Harold.

The two ended up talking for two and a half hours.

He learned Harold had previously worked as a crane operator but had to retire due to health issues.

Harold, it turns out had clogged heart valves and a disease that had been ravaging him for years.

Harold said he was nearing the end of his life and was overjoyed to be in the presence of a crane once more.

ā€œHe said he enjoys seeing what he use to love to do for a living and never thought heā€™d ever be able to see or be around a crane again. Let alone be so close to see one in action,ā€ Shawn wrote.

Shawn was saddened to learn that despite having two daughters and a son, Haroldā€™s family had not visited him in the seven years he had been in a nursing home.

He decided to strike a deal with Harold.

Shawn told Harold that he would come to sit and talk with him every day after his shift ended. So Harold could critique and judge him on how his crane work that day went.

Shawn would be able to learn from Harold in this manner.

In exchange, Shawn would bring Harold a black coffee every morning and lunch twice a week from wherever Harold desired.

ā€œHe didnā€™t skip a beat before ABSOLUTELY! came out of his mouth. I guess Iā€™m writing this post because if I would have never walked over to him I would have never gotten to know him.ā€

ā€œIā€™m thankful to have the opportunity to make this manā€™s last days enjoyable. Filled with purpose and to be able to help him smile again,ā€ Shawn added.

Shawn mentioned in his post, to encourage people to help bring joy to others.

ā€œI challenge any of you on here to not be like I was in the beginning and donā€™t be afraid to make someone elseā€™s day better. Always try to enlighten someoneā€™s spirits. When God chooses to take this man home Iā€™m happy knowing that Iā€™ve been placed here at this location to make his days better. Iā€™m happy with that.ā€
