Man uses wheelbarrow to take sick dog to the top of his favorite mountain one last time
Carlos Fresco, 57, took his four-legged best bud Monty, a Labradoodle, up Pen y Fan which is the highest peak in south Wales, situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Fresco had to use a wheelbarrow to take his beloved dog up the mountain as the 10-year-old dog was taking on an 18-month-long battle with leukemia.
Carlos knew he didn’t have much time with Monty.
Man and dog had visited this place lots and lots of times. It’s become their favorite so there was no better place to make one more memory with a good friend. A journey of love.
Carlos had Monty since he was a puppy and the pair have spent their lives walking around the UK and exploring hills and mountains. Together, they have reached three peaks.
Monty was diagnosed with cancer nearly 2 years ago. After undergoing treatments, the dog regained his health but in the past 2 months, Monty’s leukemia returned and his health began to deteriorate.
Carlos shared,
“I knew Monty was dying as his cancer had returned. He was diagnosed 18 months ago and responded very well to chemotherapy but unfortunately, his leukemia returned eight weeks ago, and he declined very rapidly.”
Poor Monty.
This good boy always enjoyed walks but now that his health does not allow him to move on his own, Carlos had to think of a way to get his best bud up that mountain one last time.
A friend lent him an old wheelbarrow which Carlos cleaned and oiled up just so Monty could go for a ride.
Carlos stuffed the wheelbarrow with blankets so Monty would be comfortable, and soon they began their hike to the top of Pen y Fan. Monty got a lot of attention on the way, with strangers pushing him along when they could.
Monty loved the support and affection he was getting.
“People on the hills were so kind and equally so sad at his deteriorating condition,” Fresco said. “In fact total strangers asked if they could share in pushing Monty on his last journey – many total strangers shed a tear as we all love dearly our little four-legged friends.”
Monty always loved to mingle and it was obvious he touched so many lives.
“Our little companions are never judgmental, are always there waiting for you and offer comfort when things haven’t gone well.”
Carlos continued.
On the morning of Father’s Day, Monty passed away at the foot of Carlos’ bed. Fresco says Monty looked so peaceful when he looked over the mattress.
He was just glad they got to go on one last adventure together.
Another dog who deserves to be mentioned is 16-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Cocoa.
Tom Antonino and his wife, Lauren Slepin, spent as much time as they could with Cocoa before old age caught up with their beloved dog. Their favorite place was Virginia Beach where lots of memories were made.
So Tom and Lauren built a mobile bed for Cocoa so she could still come along and enjoy the sights and sounds of their favorite places.
Sadly, Cocoa died after a few months. But those few months were well spent as Tom and Lauren showered her with so much love and affection as all pets certainly deserve.
