Versatile opera singer covers both male and female parts of “The Prayer”
Marcelito Pomoy is a Filipino singer who rose to fame after winning the second season of Pilipinas Got Talent.
The reason he won? Because he has such a wide vocal range that he can sing both the tenor and soprano parts of a duet!
Videos abound of the now 35-year-old singer performing both parts of many famous duets – and they’re all equally hard to believe. Not only can he perform in two vastly different vocal ranges, but his ability to switch back and forth so quickly makes it hard to believe there’s not a background track filling in for him.
But it wasn’t always clear that the talented singer would be able to pursue his passion. His early life was anything but charmed.
When Pomoy was young, his father was incarcerated and his mother left and he had to care for his younger sibling. Eventually, he was adopted by a local police officer and given the opportunity to do odd jobs to make a living. For a time, he worked as a bowling pin boy, earning just $1/day.
But it was while he was working in the poultry industry – of all things – that he discovered his vocal talents.
While he wasn’t successful at his first attempts to enter local talent competitions, he did make the cut for Pilipinas Got Talent in 2011. He blew away the other finalists in the competition to take home the grand prize, winning nearly $40,000USD, enough money to reunite him with his family.
Dubbed the “Man with the golden female voice,” his final performance on the show was a cover of “The Prayer,” originally performed by opera singer Andrea Bocelli and pop star Celine Dion. It was a performance that would earn him a standing ovation from the entire crowd and all three judges.
What’s even more amazing is that Pomoy only speaks Filipino fluently, but he sang Dion’s part in English and Bocelli’s in Italian, just like the original.
After his victory, he was in high demand for his vocal skills and one of his most popular videos is a repeat performance of his winning song, performed live at radio station Wish 107.5 in Manila.
It was recorded in 2018, after which Pomoy was invited to the U.S. to appear on The Ellen Show and even meet his idol Celine Dion, who gushed over his amazing skills.
He refused to believe the invitation was real until he received the plane tickets, but the talk show host assured him that he was indeed there because people were stunned by his talent.
He performed two solo duets on the show – “The Prayer” and “Beauty and the Beast,” both clearly inspired by his love of Dion’s voice.
Pomoy manages to switch back and forth between parts so quickly that it’s hard to believe everything is coming from just one person.
These days, Pomoy is a regular on ASAP, one of the biggest TV shows in The Phillippines.
He also continues to perform and sell albums, his first was titled Duet Yourself and the second Split.
