Memorable maid of honor speech has bride and groom both laughing and crying

“Well, I’m glad I had a bunch of Johnny Walker Blue before I came here so I can be prepared for this.”

Those were the opening lines of Heidi Garcia’s sister Melanie’s wedding toast as the bride and groom looked at each other with wide eyes.

Normally, wedding speeches are tedious. Everyone is forced to hold a glass while someone who is usually not terribly gifted at public speaking nervously makes their way through some notes and tries to sneak in a few jokes that ultimately fall flat.

Most people can’t wait for this part of the wedding to be over – including the speakers themselves.

But we do it because it’s tradition.

In a video uploaded to YouTube back in 2014 – which has now been viewed by over 7.6 million people – one maid of honor/sister showed that not all wedding speeches are bad.

Standing next to the bride and groom, David and Heidi, Mel took the microphone and first thanked David’s side of the family for welcoming them with open arms – and her own family for simply being on time.

With dry wit and a penchant for public speaking, Mel goes on to make a truly hilarious toast to the new couple.

“Does she do stand-up?? She’s hilarious,” said one viewer.

And, indeed, it’s a speech that gets the whole audience laughing – and has the bride and groom raising their eyebrows (with a smile more than once).

We’re not sure how their mom feels but Mel warns her early on that her instructions to neither burp nor curse will only be partially followed.

Despite implying that she put plenty of thought into her big moment just 30 minutes prior to the ceremony, it’s pretty clear that this was a well-practiced speech.

After her first appreciative round of applause, it looks like Mel might just leave it at that, but she does in fact have some notes nearby to consult.

First, she thanks her sister for so obviously being her parents’ favorite child as well as a total suckup, mentioning how wonderful it has been for her to have played the role of the black sheep of the family in the meantime.

But things do get serious and even emotional for a moment when Melanie admits she, in fact, wrote the speech numerous times and simply couldn’t come up with words strong enough to express her love for her sister.

Already it’s the perfect speech – they laughed, they cried – what more could anyone want?

But as both sisters wipe away tears, there are luckily more laughs to come. It’s clear that no one’s mascara is going to stay in place at this point because they’re either weeping or laughing until they cry.

And one of the biggest lessons Mel has learned from Heidi? Sometimes you just need to “pack up your shit and move to New Hampshire” in order to fall in love. Noted!

The good news is that Heidi only became a Bridezilla twice during the wedding planning (which took place from an impressive 1300 miles away!). And while we can’t see much more of the surroundings, we do know that she certainly picked a great maid of honor.

As part of her sage advice, Mel begins to wrap up the speech by telling David to never forget to say those 3 most important words every day to his new wife: You are right.
