Men exploring abandoned water park encounter strays that lead them to a friend in need
When 21-year-old YouTube filmmaker and vlogger Trevor Costelloe and his friend Dave embarked on one of their many urban adventures in early 2019, they had no idea they would end up saving a life that day.
Costelloe’s videos are designed to encourage people to get outdoors and explore parts of their city that they would normally overlook.
This time they chose an abandoned water park in San Diego.
While exploring abandoned places requires a lot of care, you’re bound to come across something interesting.
In Dave and Trevor’s case, it was a small pack of dogs.
Knowing it could potentially lead to trouble, the duo was very careful at first and kept their distance. The first dog they saw was large and white and was lurking near the dilapidated slides.
The dog was staring at them as if it was trying to catch their eye.
The pair decided to get closer to see what was going on – and that’s when they encountered the second dog – a pitbull.
They were wary (especially of the pitbull), but it appeared that the dogs were trying to tell them something and so they decided to check out the situation.
As the dogs approached the explorers, Trevor and Dave had a few regrets about getting so close and try to back off.
But it appears the dogs really are trying to get them to follow – so eventually they all head off down a trail.
After a bit of walking, the dogs bring them to a tank of standing water. That’s when they realized something is in there.
San Diego had recently received a lot of rain, so there was standing water in places that were normally dry.
In this case, it appears a third dog had fallen in and couldn’t get out.
It’s unclear how long he was in there, but the men said he appeared to be losing strength from all the effort of trying to escape.
Apparently, the two dogs had gone off looking for help for their friend. That’s why they sought out the strangers’ attention.
Luckily, Trevor and Dave were able to fetch the struggling little brown dog from the water by grabbing on to his paws and pulling him to safety.
Once the brown dog was safe, he happily reunited with his friends in a sweet moment.
After the rescue, the white and brown dogs ran off. However, the pitbull – the dog they were afraid of at first – stayed behind.
It’s almost as if he was thanking the two men for their help.
Trevor and Dave were shocked that they managed to be in the right place at the right time.
“I cannot believe that happened,” Trevor said. “We barely saved that dog. If we didn’t come here to film today and explore this place, that dog honestly would have drowned. He barely had any strength left.”
Over the last year, the video has earned nearly a quarter of a million views on Costelloe’s YouTube channel and another 3 million when it was posted by The Dodo on their YouTube channel.
While some claim the whole thing was staged, there’s no real indication of that.
It appears to simply have been a lucky day for everyone involved.
