Meth addict beats her addiction — gets GED and shares her transformation to encourage others
No illicit drug is good for the body. But there’s one, in particular, that literally destroys lives from the inside out. Methamphetamine, otherwise known as “meth,” is an extremely powerful stimulant. Addicts often end up snorting, smoking, or injecting a crystalized form of this drug.
What makes meth so incredibly bad is that it’s highly addictive. For a lot of people, using this drug just once is all it takes to become hooked. That leads to years, if not a lifetime, of struggling to kick the habit. Sadly, thousands of people die from a meth overdose every year. But one young woman decided to get off the drug and turn her life around. Fortunately, she succeeded.
Meth contains a number of caustic ingredients.
The ingredients used to make meth should be enough to deter anyone from ever trying it, but that’s not the case. This nasty drug contains things like acetone, the same ingredient in nail polish remover, anhydrous ammonia used to make fertilizer, and lithium found in batteries. Other common ingredients include toluene, a corrosive substance in brake fluid, lye used to dissolve the bodies of roadkill, and sulfuric acid, which is found in toilet bowl cleaner. There are other toxic substances as well.
Jamee Valet was tired of living the life of a meth and heroin addict so she decided to do something about it.
Jamee expressed in an interview that growing up was hard. As a way of coping, she turned to sex, alcohol, and drugs at a very early age. By 13, she was already smoking marijuana, which quickly turned to prescription pills like Percocet, Morphine, Dilaudid, Oxycodone, and Vicodin.
A traumatizing event in her life led her down a dark path.
Jamee’s rough childhood was nothing compared to what was in her future. Eventually, she dropped out of high school. But then, something horrific happened. At 17 years of age, two men raped her. Her already troubled life was spiraling further out of control. Before long, alcohol, pot, and pills no longer gave her a means of escape.
Making a life-altering decision.
After the rape ordeal, Jamee stated, “I was traumatized and depressed from the rapes, and the first thing I did the day I walked out of the door was met up with some guy.” That’s when she was first introduced to meth and heroin. Without the money needed to buy her drugs, she turned to home robberies. But at 19, she was arrested.
Jamee went on to be arrested an additional five times.
Here was this beautiful young woman who could be anything she wanted but she felt as though she was drowning. While sitting in jail, she even tried to commit suicide. As Jamee explained, “Suicide was my escape plane my whole life.” She went on to say, “When I was in jail for the first time, I didn’t have the drugs to numb myself and my actions kept catching up to me.”
Breaking free from her past.
Determined to stop the cycle of abuse, she entered a one-year inpatient program. It was there she met her boyfriend, Jake, whom she credits for helping her get through the tough times. Although Jamee relapsed on a few occasions, she persevered. Today, she’s been clean and sober for more than a year. While her journey wasn’t easy, she’s proud of her accomplishments.
Jamee earned her GED and started a Facebook page called “The Addict’s Diary. There, she welcomes other people to share their journeys to recovery. Perhaps the most impacting…the before and after photos Jamee posted of herself. Now 25 years old, she’s focusing on becoming an aesthetician while living life to the fullest with her boyfriend and dogs by her side.
