Michael J. Fox discusses the loss of his best friend in a touching interview
Dogs don’t know how to discriminate. They will love you whether you’re a regular person or someone famous. They will devote their lives to anyone they fall in love with.
Gus, a Great Dane-Labrador, had been with Michael J. fox for several years.
In fact, the dog had been with him for almost half as long as he has been fighting Parkinson’s disease. Gus acted as his support animal.
In an interview with CBS News, Michael shared a memory of his dog when he returned from the hospital following his spinal surgery. He said:
“He kind of circles the wheelchair, with this low kind of woof woof, woof woof, and sat in front of the wheelchair right in front of me, and looked at me, and I said, ‘It’s gonna be okay.'”
Gus knew Michael too well.
He always knew that there was something different about his human and he just didn’t care. Even if Michael’s tendency was to isolate himself because of his chronic illness, Gus helped him open up.
Whenever Michael was taking him out for walks in Central Park, people would stop just to talk to him.
For Michael, the reason people did that wasn’t because he was an actor. The real reason why people approached them was because of Gus. He’s charmed everyone he met.
Unfortunately, the great dog passed away.
Michael shared the devastating news on his Instagram account. Along with his dog’s photo, he posted:
“Gus — great dog and loyal friend, we’ll miss you”
To immortalize his furry friend, Michael wrote about him in No Time Like The Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality which was his 2020 memoir.
There, he recalled the time they first met. According to Michael, they rescued each other and they’ve been inseparable ever since.
Tracy Pollan, Michael’s wife, gave him a very special gift years ago.
It was a plaque that reads: “For Mike and Gus. True New Yorkers.” She gave it to him as a birthday gift. Now, it serves as a memory of their friendship.
People on the internet felt sad for Michael and Gus.
One YouTube user commented:
“I’m so sorry Gus is gone.
You’re right Michael, a dog will open you up and they will squeeze every last drop of love from you every so gently.
Love the heck outta you Michael J! ❤”
Another one said:
“Poor Gus. There’s a special place in Heaven for him. He’s waiting for the day when he and Mike can run like puppies…”
There was also this person who commented:
“Gus loyally loved MjF and took the roller coaster symptoms of his incurable illness like no problem, not afraid at all — that was a Great Dane right there.”
Gus might be gone but his memories live on.
He has helped Michael go through the progression of his disease and for that, he’ll forever live in his heart and everyone who knew him.
