Widow keeps late wife’s poinsettia and the “miracle plant” continues to grow and grow
We will all experience things throughout our lives that science, reason, and even common sense is unable to explain. Sometimes we refer to these instances as miracles. One man from Halifax, Nova Scotia, in Canada believes he is the owner of a “miracle plant.”
The story of Frankie and Maxine Allison’s “Miracle Plant.”
Frankie Allison’s wife Maxine won a call-in radio show contest on Christmas Eve one year. Her prize was a small poinsettia, the classic plant often used to celebrate the holiday season.
Tragically, Maxine died just 3 days after she won the plant. She suffered a massive heart attack and left both Frankie and the poinsettia behind.
A heartbroken widow.
Frankie was heartbroken at the loss of his wife. He had planned to dispose of the plant but then he noticed it growing and transforming before his very eyes. This poinsettia would not grow in the same way others typically do.
Most poinsettia’s do not grow for very long. They tend to be seasonal plants and don’t often last longer than the holiday season. This was not your typical poinsettia, however, it was Frankie and Maxine’s miracle plant.
Growing for nearly 2 decades.
While most poinsettias only last a few months, this one continued growing for nearly two decades. When media covered the story in 2016, Frankie and Maxine’s poinsettia had been growing for 19 years.
The plant continued growing the whole time. It eventually grew into a truly massive plant. What it symbolized to Frankie was even larger, however.
“It just kept growing,” said Frankie to CBC News. “Pretty soon I won’t be able to look out the picture window.”
Frankie no longer needed a Christmas tree.
Eventually, the plant grew so big that Frankie began using it as his Christmas tree. He would string up lights on it during the holiday season but he’d care for it all year long. The plant became a tribute to his memory of Maxine.
“They say that’s a miracle plant,” Frankie says his friends say to him. “They always say your wife is still with you.”
Since Maxine received the plant just days before her death, Frankie believes it is her spirit which keeps it growing. He wants to keep the plant healthy to honor her memory so he takes care of it as best he can.
Frankie takes care of the “Miracle Plant”
Frankie says he waters the plant twice a week as that is all it needs. He also gives it fertilizer.
He says that while the plant is magical all year long, the Christmas season is when it is its most special. That is when the plant reminds him of Maxine the most as it is the time of year when she passed.
Every year around the holiday season, Frankie says the plant blossoms. Its leaves change from green to red. He says it fills his living room with memories of Maxine.
The plant is now huge.
The plant is now over 5 feet tall and weighs over 100 pounds. Experts say they have never heard of anything like this. Poinsettias are only supposed to last a few months, but this one kept growing for nearly 20 years.
Frankie says the plant’s longevity is due to Maxine’s spirit. It means she is looking down on him. It is his “miracle plant.”
