After owner dies, dog that had been missing mysteriously shows up at her funeral
Almost all dog owners love their pets, but do their dogs love them in the same way? A loving dog owner makes sure that their pet has everything they need, even after death. And while many pets go to family or friends when an owner passes away, do they realize what has happened to their former owner? One dog’s actions in Mexico might make you think twice if you answered no.
Bayron’s owner suffers from cancer
Dog owner Doña Rosalba Quiroz loved her dog Bayron Max. The two lived on a ranch together outside of the Mexican city of Montelorelos. While living there, Quiroz found out that she had cancer. She went to stay with family and initially was able to travel to take care of Bayron. Unfortunately, she had to ask family members to take care of Bayron after her cancer took a turn for the worse.
Bayron comes up missing
Upon arriving at the ranch to take care of him, family members could not find the dog. To make matters worse, two weeks later, Quiroz succumbed to her cancer and passed away. However, at the funeral for Quiroz, attendees heard a dog howling outside and scratching at the door. Upon looking, a funeral worker was shocked to find Bayron trying to get in.
Somehow, Bayron had found Quiroz’s funeral
Somehow, Bayron had found the funeral home where his dead owner lay, even though it was miles away from the ranch where they both had lived. It seemed Bayron had come to say goodbye to his former owner. At a loss for what to do, the workers at the funeral home let the grieving dog inside.
“We normally don’t let animals in, but the dog was howling and scratching at the door, so we brought him in,” a worker at the funeral home told El Sol.
Bayron pays his final respects
Bayron made his way to Quiroz’s coffin and laid down beside it. He even got up to view her body when others at the funeral did the same. No one knows if he truly understood what had happened to his former owner.
“We’ve never seen a case like this,” the owner of the funeral home said. “We’re all surprised how the animal, without knowing, arrived alone to say goodbye to his owner.”
Do dogs grieve for their owners when they die?
It is not known for sure whether dogs grieve for their owners when they pass away. There is plenty of evidence to say that they do, such as dogs howling at their owner’s funeral, refusing to leave their graveside, or even tracking down their owner’s grave after they have been laid to rest.
Dogs are very social animals, so it would stand to reason that they would grieve the loss of a friend, such as another dog or their human owner. When they do grieve, dogs show their grief through a variety of ways, including withdrawing socially, failing to eat or drink, or even vocalizing distress — all behaviors that point toward sadness and depression from the loss of someone that they loved.
This seemed to be the case with Bayron. And while it is not clear what exactly happened to Bayron after the funeral was over, it is hoped that Quiroz’s family honored her final wishes by taking care of him in her absence.
