Shelter dog hesitant to trust until staff discovers he was reported missing 3 years ago
Losing a pet is never easy. Many owners struggle with the loss of their pet since the comfort and care a pet used to fill is lost. It’s the same way with a dog that has lost its home.
Based on the American Humane Association, they estimated that 1 out of 3 pets have gone missing in their lifetime.
One of the most common reasons is pets often wander around different places which results in them getting lost. Other reasons may be due to theft. In fact, the Coalition for Reuniting Pets and Families stated that close to 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the US every single year.
Luckily, 23% of these missing pets are reunited with their owners.
Some are given new homes while others wait for a new family in the shelter. The lives of dogs are hard especially when they are taken away from their families. They have to learn to survive on their own and rely on the meals given by the strangers to live.
There are a couple of stories of pets who went missing and were found again. One of them was Runt.
Runt used to be part of a happy and loving family in Tennesse. He lived on a wide farm where he can play and run freely. However, one day he went off on an adventure and never came back.
Runt wandered off of the farm and spent three years living in the streets trying to find a way back home.
Runt’s family looked for him everywhere. They never gave up hope even though it was taking days, months, and years since Runt left their home. As for Runt, he spent his days in a neighborhood that is 10 miles away from his home.
The kind people of the neighborhood gave him food, but Runt mostly kept to himself.
For three years, Runt lived as a stray dog until he was taken by Animal Control. Runt stayed at the Washington County, TN Animal Shelter. They named him Roscoe.
During his stay at the shelter, they found out that Roscoe mostly kept to himself like he usually does when he was in the streets.
He wasn’t very affectionate to the people around him and he prefers to shyly stay in his room. He was always cautious with the people around him, but he would take treats from people with whom he was familiar.
They were hoping that Roscoe can find a home, so they posted a photo of him on their Facebook page.
“Roscoe has been here over 6 months. He has not formed any attachment to people and doesn’t act like he wants to. He is not aggressive. He is just very cautious. He will take treats from people he is familiar with, but will move away immediately. He is not going to be a cuddle buddy.” they said in the Facebook post.
In a stroke of luck, Roscoe or Runt’s family saw the post.
They immediately went to the shelter to pick up Runt. At first, Runt was hesitant when he met his father.
But after a few sniffs and warm hugs, he leaped on his paws and ran to his father.
It was a very touching reunion between Runt and his family.
